Get the offer first, then worry about turning it down
I have the verbal lol
I turned down bcg for ibm for the same exact pay and love my life. Working way less hours, yeah it’s not as prestigious but I’m a hard worker and ibm is still a good company :)
Honestly if you know that’s a hard no, why would you apply to MBB in the first place
I didn’t. Recruiter reached Out and I was intrigued
I did when I was in India. Thought I didn’t want to be a corporate whore, came to the US and became one 😂 (with a different consulting firm).

A friend of mine turned down McK for an in house strategy gig and is loving life making more $$$ working 9-5

Dam what firm
I’m sure people have. FWIW talking about ‘what you like’ describes my experience here for the past 2 years - which I intend to maintain as much as possible.
70/80 hour weeks are not the norm, more like 50-60
It’s mainly because there’s 1/3 of the firm that is all about McKinsey = life. And when there’s someone like that on your team, everyone else just gets dragged into working more to 1) impress them if they are your boss or 2) compete with so that your rating doesn’t get wrecked by being way underperformed compared to your fellow teammate

Why waste so much time interviewing then?

Yah it's not for everyone, if you are a person who can set strong boundaries, are not a people pleaser, an insecure over-achiever and are ok getting promoted slower - you can make both work.
I was recently promoted to AP and I am happily married with 2 young kids and spend plenty of time with my family.
Plenty of people
MBB yield rates are very high so not many refuse an offer but it definitely happens. It’s not for everyone and that’s fine. In NA it’ll be more like 60 hr weeks and even my SM and partner are able to go back home to see their kids but do have a lot in their plate.
Yield rates are shockingly high. ~95% for some offices
Yep I did for a strong tier 2 consulting company; maybe not for the hours but definitely for the culture and less cut throat mentality… pretty happy with my life
Yeah, turn it down.
People come to MBB for a career path to bank 7 figures a year doing intellectually stimulating work (which consumes time, yes) with smart interesting people to work/socialize with(which also consumes time).
My brother worked for McK for many years. Sister worked for Bain. Both ended up divorced with the primary reason being their hectic work lifestyle and not being able to spend time with their spouses and kids. Learnt a great deal through their experience.
Coming out of b-school, I had an offer from BCG and turned it down to avoid going down the same path as my siblings.
Now I do something that is not as hectic and maintain my time with my wife and kids.

I’d guess it’s more common for people to accept an offer and fairly quickly realize it’s not for them. Better to know earlier on, since (at least at McKinsey) you don’t even get the alumni benefits if you leave before a year in
