Left for a 40% salary increase. Yes, you should stay till manager if you can and work for at least one busy season. You will get great job prospects afterwards
From SM to controller
I actually just made this exact move earlier in the year. I was an M1 in FS audit, and I accepted a controller position at an investment bank. My salary increased by about 25% and I was actually surprised by how good the benefits were, I get 4 weeks vacation plus 4 addl PTO days, parental leave (regardless of role) is 5 months, there’s a company stock purchasing program. Much lower stress than PA, my hours on a typical day are 8-6, but occasionally need to work a bit later, and I’ve only needed to work one Saturday in the past 9 months (after working every Saturday while in PA). Overall I’m definitely happy with the decision, the worst thing so far is that I’ve been completely remote since I started so I haven’t met anyone in person, and miss the camaraderie of PA.
Thank you so much!! Would you say it’s harder now to get opportunities leaving as a manager versus as a senior with just public experience?
This is so great to hear there’s hope on the other side. Sometimes I feel like it’s my fault that I am burned out and always behind regardless of how much I work, it’s good to hear it can get better if you wait for the right opportunity.
