I’ve taken leave for an episode of major depression.
1. Do you have STD in your benefits plan? If so, initiate a claim with your provider. There will be paperwork for your doctor as part of the approval process. I saw my psychiatrist first before initiating the claim. Your insurance provider may have a requirement of taking a set amount of consecutive PTO before your leave starts. There should be guidance on all of this with your employer.
2. I stopped working immediately per my doctor’s instructions and filed the claim. Don’t worry about handoff. Not sure if that impacts your claim as it sounds like you could keep working, which reminds me of this news story. Totally different situation though. https://amp.miamiherald.com/news/state/florida/article284925187.html
3/4. Take as much time as you need. You work with your doctor for the return to work date. You can always change if you need. They probably have an idea of how much time someone in your position needs, but each case is different. I think I saw my doctor weekly which may have been policy but also I was in an abysmal state of mind. Perhaps with telehealth services you could travel abroad if there is a requirement to meet with your doctor regularly.
Took a couple months. Maybe should have done longer but I was starting to get anxiety about returning. I would consider myself still not 100% and it’s been over a year. But I do feel I’ve turned a corner recently with some additional medication.
1) approval process
2) timing - if / when claim is approved do you immediately go on leave or can you somewhat schedule? I’d like to make sure I have a handoff plan for backfills.
3) process while on leave? I was hoping to go stay with my mom who lived abroad on leave, but i don’t know if that’s an option? I’m seeing online that you need regular checking with a medical professional through the leave?
4) what’s the general time you’re approved for and when do you know?
I am really glad that you posted this OP as my sister has been talking about taking short term disability to take a break from work due to her mental health and she isn't sure what the process is either. I told her she should look into it though because she is very burned out.
