I honestly think saying up front “there’s a belief in the industry that slalom pays less than market value and I’m looking for xxxxxxx, are we talking about the same range?” Is fine.
If they’re offended by your question, it’s likely because they weren’t going to pay you within that range to begin with
Loved the way you put it D1. I am going to use this elsewhere
I got very far in the process with them before we covered pay, they offered what I was making 7 years ago and told them thanks but no thanks. I knew they were below market, but never expected that low.
Yeah, I have heard similar stories from multiple contacts.
I have seen huge swings in comp and people come over at all different levels. Referrals and those joining newer/smaller markets seem to get good packages.
If you like to sell then make sure you are a CSL or CSP. If you want to lead a capability then come in as a PAL. The SP and PC roles are not equivalent for a strong SM from D.
Also, I wouldn't count on bonus attainment if it is a newer team/office/client - have seen people negotiate their base to be higher in exchange for some of the variable compensation which was smart.
Feel free to DM me if you are still talking with Slalom and would like some tips. Would rather see someone join with the right package than come in and ultimately end up unhappy (or never join at all).
👍🏼 good luck.
Agree with D1 - I was offered significantly more by Slalom than I was by other firms and then was still able to negotiate up, so I wouldn’t assume that you are going to be lowballed. They’re willing to pay for good talent, but also are looking for people who put a price tag on the other benefits (namely, sleeping in your own bed every night and being a part of your community, etc) and factor that in. Letting them know what you’re looking for won’t offend the culture
SM here. For reference, I was offered a partner-equivalent role at slalom for the same pay I make as a Deloitte SM.
Just ask. No one will be offended. We don’t want to waste our time and we don’t want to waste your time
Make it clear upfront and don’t fall for any promises ok fast tracking or quick trajectory.
Took a slight cut coming over and after talking with other firms - saw they are paying me 20% below my market value
To waste everyone’s time to go through 10+ meetings if in the end we are not working at the same level.
Why not just bring up what your expectation is early in the process. I think that’s totally fair.
Share your range. And call out that you recognize that there's also intrinsic value for you in the local model. Slalom won't be offended...and you won't be disappointed down stream.
You’d be surprised. Just depends on the market on your skills. Quite possibly you could get paid the same or more without having to travel or be tied to sales..
If you want no travel and better pay, LEK does no travel and they pay very well at the post-MBA levels.
