Bain & Company Hey! Got dinged at BCG and Mck and then hadn't heard back from Bain, but just found out I made it to final rounds. I haven't been prepping for over a week as it'd be two since my first round at Bain.
Help! Whats different or similar about Bain final rounds? I'm applying to Texas offices for an experienced AC role. I also may have to have an accelerated final round as I'm leaving the country for most of April. Bain & Company

Coach
Bit of rant. Came in as an EH A (BA).
So far, I feel quite disappointed. Yes.
I feel like I was set up to fail.
1) verbally abusive manager as my new-hire pairing:
a) Skipped 10 of our 12 of agreed upon weekly feedback sessions. They rarely responded when I needed help and were notorious for “ghosting” their A/Cs.
b) Sample on their feedback is “well you need to use more critical thinking”, “well we have f*cking nothing to show the MDP “, “this makes no sense”, and a smattering of other swear words/demeaning comments. Minimal actually helpful feedback.
c) multiple Cs told me this PL was the worst manager they had worked with to date and recommended I start over after the pairing
2) left on bench for multiple weeks after pairing; no help from staffing. Begged staffing/networked for weeks to get any possible case. It left me little chance to create a good narrative on performance until many weeks later.
3) finally got staffed and worked 70 hour weeks to prove I could do the work. Despite getting top scores in that longer case and receiving praise on any bench (sts) work I did, I was still marked as a poor performer (yellow) in my first 6 month performance review (cdc). Specifically told it was for “conservative reasons”, due to the feedback of my first manager. It surprised me since my performance manager (CDA) said I was “on track” coming out of the pairing, 3 months prior.
4) Right after that review, I was staffed completely by myself on a case that asked me to run two separate modules (no other cases available). It was an incredibly niche/private client who spoke with more acronyms than English and was incredibly set in its ways of working.
a) PL neglected to tell me they were part time and would completely stop responding after 4:00 pm. Aligning was next to impossible, and they were often surprised when the work deviated from their expectations. That tends to happen when you don’t help approve the case’s direction for half of every day.
b) PL also neglected to mention they would leave on vacation during the latter half of the case. They also did not mention 2 key meetings (1 internal and 1 external) that were coming up. An overloaded MDP had to manage me during that time. Of course, they barely responded.
c) I found out the first key meeting from the MDP. The meeting needed an entirely new deliverable. It was due before the PL came back from vacation and was on top of all my other work.
d) I found out about the second key meeting the day of. I needed to fly halfway across the country and was never told about it, despite specifically asking for a travel schedule. Ended up having to immediately go to the airport and get on the earliest flight out.
e) l worked 16-18 hours a day and completely burned myself out. Haven’t been given feedback on that case despite asking for it multiple times.
So here I am, closing in on a year at BCG. Currently waiting to see if I will be involuntarily transitioned in the next couple months. I feel like I did everything I could to do well. So far, I just shattered both my health and my confidence. This was my dream job/career before I got here and I am not sure what I will do after.

Good for you (?)
In a sentence: it’s better for your career, but worse for your life.

Yeah, I should’ve gone to BB
Why?
Glad to have the brand on my CV for exit ops. Actual experience, pretty mediocre
Very happy where I am, genuinely. Been only 6 months, but I’m in PEG, and so far it’s awesome. Had one shitty case, but others have been good or super fun (even when WLB took a hit). Had very good teams every time, and very solid leads most times.
Also loving the social events and the fact that I can do charity / social work while at work (even when that means staying an extra hour in the office on a long day).
B3 - No it doesn't. What world are you living in my friend? Not everyone started in MBB day 1!
Loving my move. Came from a T2 one year after MBA. More project variety, extremely nice people, amazing leadership and mentorship. The unexpected cherry on top is much better work life balance as well, and I received a higher rating than I did at my previous firm and have felt valued throughout the year.
I have worked on over 5 completely different teams here with no overlapping people and every team has been this way.
+1 to WLB being better at BCG vs my previous firm

I was at a T2 before and pretty happy with the move overall. The bits that hurt are that (1) had to take a pay cut and down level, so am “behind” comp wise for at least the medium term and (2) life was a bit easier at the T2 - took less effort to get excellent ratings (which keeps partner attention on you in a good way).
The work is reasonably similar, but Bain gets cooler projects for sure - I’ve been really happy with my case experience. Plus the brand, the people, etc. make it worth the change. WLB is actually a bit better at Bain too!
If you’re moving from a T2, the differences are at the margin but IMO very meaningful. If moving from a big 4 or similar, it’s a complete overhaul in terms of your experience and opportunities.

Exact same experience as B3
Happy to have the brand name on CV. Firm events keep me engaged and happy but my WLB and mental health have taken a pretty big hit. Hoping next staffing will be better, I’m on a longer term case though :/ Im from a technical background and while I really like most people I meet, I wonder if BCG may have been a better social fit.
I mean I obviously don’t know but Bain being fratty isn’t a complete myth

Should have taken the McK offer
Coach
Pretty happy I took the BCG offer
Insanely happy to have made the switch. 0 regrets.
Enthusiast
No. Best decision ive made.

Sure feel free to DM. Wlb is better than ZS, better pay, good culture, etc.
Came from T2. I was (and am still) shocked by the cultural differences between the two firms, but overall happy and excited about my career
Yes.
Not even slightly.
glad to learn these as I am also aiming the move post MBA. where were you guys before the move??
No mba but I started my career at pwc - happy to answer any q’s as well
Nope. I’m also happy about my choice, definitely the most fitting MBB for myself.
No, fantastic choice so far
Yes - was unfortunate to encounter really really terrible case leaders. No longer there but prolly scarred me for a long while
Came from Deloitte. Not dissappointed. Lots of pros and cons, but mostly pros.
