Sadly this has happened to me more than once and every single time I have stayed completely calm and said "can you please not raise your voice at me." If they continue to raise their voice I will say it one more time before I will just walk away. Remember, you don't have to attend every fight you are invited to.
You don't have to attend every fight you are invited to => Well said. Thanks for sharing
This happened to a coworker when I was in the room. She just said “Do not yell at me. I am going to go get lunch. We can continue this conversation when you have calmed down.” And she walked out of the room.
Things were fine for a while, but when it happened again she brought it up to their manager. The third time it happened she said she would no longer work with that person. When the person was not moved to another team, she found a new job and left.
@BOA2 - That's an awful manager
It happened to me once. I just looked at that person in the eyes and asked him “Are you okay? Is everything alright?”
It’s usually a function of things not going great for them. Obviously very bad behavior but don’t take it personal.
Great approach
The best thing to do is to look the person in the face. Remain calm. When you do answer, have a calm and steady answer. Your calmness usually has an affect of letting the person know, you're not going to their level and they end up apologizing for their behavior. Works with kids
Nice de-escalating approach. But does it work with adults
First of all I am not about to entertain any form of yelling in my home and especially from someone I only spend a few hrs with.better check yourself before approaching me with yelling,I'm not babysitter.
Ha ha :) :)
If our customers get rude or abusive over the phone, we first advise them to stop with the abusive language or we will lol to terminate the conversation.
If the customer refuses to let us speak, we actually have a dedicated line that we can transfer the customer to without notice which is an automated message that advises the same.

I haven't had something like this happen in my workplace since I was a bartender in college. Restaurant industry is brutal, it's like almost a daily occurrence when someone gets yelled at. I was so glad to get out of that environment
Yelling at people who are handling our food is not very smart :)
