Have you ever felt completely secure in a job, only for everything to change without warning? I once had a role I truly loved, remote, stable, and aligned with what I needed at the time. Then I was told I was part of a workforce reduction, and the stability I relied on disappeared instantly. How do you rebuild when something you trusted is suddenly gone?

Never felt secure in a job. It’s always a fleeting relationship, especially in today’s world. Just do your best, keep learning, never burn a bridge, and save your money.

This is solid, grounded advice

You made the critical mistake of trusting them in the first place. The days of dedicating your life to a company and them taking care of your retirement are from the boomer era. Today jobs are gigs and you use them as much as they use you.

like

Calling it a critical mistake feels a bit harsh. I didn't trust them blindly, I trusted the stability they actively marketed

Can't break trust when there isn't any.

Can prep as best as possible so when the call comes your ready.

When I was an analyst I setup my monitoring and response environment with a number of automations I built for myself and never advertised. I was coming to work happy, then covid hit and it was like I never had to work. Then people started asking how I was able to respond faster than everyone else and started accussing me of sabotage so I shared my code. They implemented my code and killed that position a few months later but kept me on board in a position that didn't really flow with me. My Co worker used to tell me all the time to stop-it, my success will get me fired one day. Well.... I'm out looking for employment now🤣🤣🤣👌. The way I see it, you pay me to do a job, why be mad at how I do that job when it's legal and makes you look good🤷🏿‍♂️. Why get mad when you hired an expert and got an expert!?

Clarence, this story hits hard. You optimized yourself into a corner brilliantly, legally, and with good intent.

The only job security i trust is if people are RELIANT on me for key projects. Everything else is BS.

I see now why when I was a grad i would question why some seniors would make suboptimal decisions... job security was their primary goal

like

Careful with that strategy, being the only person who can untangle a mess is job security until it isn't.

Now, how did I lose my last job, "Company reorganization"! I wasn't a fan of the role but I thought I was going to retire from that company. I got the news right before Christmas. My identity was taken from me. After a few sleepless nights, and experiencing this new job market, I knew I wasn't going to be working for someone for long. They all want the unicorn and to hell with everyone else. Then I thought, become the unicorn and they moved the goal post from me. Then I realized who I am on paper and in person don't align. Resumes do very little to convey decisions, effort and true impact on a company, and changed my attitude about employment. I'm not someone who needs a job, I'm a professional who warrants respect. The way I approached roles changed and now I'm competitive again. 3 interviews in a week with top dollar offerings. Now, I've obtained a new identity with a new purpose. Good luck to all in the job market. It's brutal but what's for you is for you. Go get it!

It can be really tough. I was in a very senior role for around ten years and felt very secure in that role. I had a lot of autonomy and had built up a fantastic team. Then we were bought by a big company and after a few years of disassembling everything we had established, I was made redundant.

It's a very healthy reminder that nothing is forever and no role is truly safe. I now have a new job that I love, with a team I enjoy working with, but there's always the worry that it could happen again. So it's healthy to know that nothing is forever, but it's quite stressful as well.

This is becoming a common trend in tech job, get hired and fired at any time deem fit by the organization. My best advice is nothing last forever, as you getting paid in the current job, you must also have a very profitable business ideas. Get the dollars from ur salary, compensation and so on they be pumping gradually to ur business. Over time it will stabilize, anytime they side to fire you, you got back up. As in we should not be thinking of codes alone as techies but also apply our technical knowledge to ourselves (Backup and plan B) always the best.

That’s exactly what happened to myself

Solidarity. So many of us have that same story. What helped you get through it? Always looking for what actually works, and not just what sounds good

I really don’t know because I wasn’t raised in stabilaty hinge the world and the events happening which have been since the cave dudes and which there’s cave dudes and dudets and then the religious personality’s and then you have the experience which would benefit you when you begin at another place of work.

Sometimes the least polished answers cut straight to the truth. Appreciate you.

1000%. A change in leadership, layoffs, anything like that can flip a role on its head

Change in leadership alone can wipe out years of goodwill and performance. It's not always about what you did wrong, sometimes the wind just shifts.

Just going through this myself. Completely derailed me.

Derailed is exactly the word. The hardest part isn't even the logistics, it's the identity loss. "Who am I if not this role?" Be kind to yourself right now. You're not broken. You're rebuilding.
