I don’t want to say bar complaints are meaningless, but they’re not the “end-all-be-all” because they can be flippantly filed. PD’s (and prosecutors) get random complaints from defendants at a higher rate than the average lawyer. If you do any business litigation against consumers you can also expect the occasional complaint (especially from a pro-per, or a consumer who lost). In litigation you can also earn them when you beat some schmo attorney with a chip on their shoulder.
But malpractice is a high bar (as are abuse of process/malicious prosecution claims.)
TLDR- remember the old adage: dance like no one is watching, email like it will be read aloud at a deposition.
Happened to me when I was an associate. It was specious - an unhinged pro per. It was dismissed quickly. Total headache though.
Your PD friend has bottom of the barrel trash for clients. They think they deserve Latham-level attorneys and service but have no $ to pay for it, so they blame the PD for everything. Reason #548 to never be a PD.
