Have you ever joined a well known tech company only to find the reality very different from the reputation? I have learned that big names can still have inefficient processes, complicated internal tools, and teams with very different levels of experience.
That experience reminded me that a company's brand does not always reflect the day to day work environment. What questions do you ask to uncover what a tech company is really like before accepting an offer?

Yeah, every large tech company have the same problems as the next startup. It's just that the large companies have the money to continuously keep the issues at bay.
Large companies are just companies that have something that people are willing to pay for. Even if it means it's built on sand, and stuck together with toothpaste. Now they just have more money to buy more sand and toothpaste.

That analogy is painfully accurate, and honestly, kind of comforting in a weird way. It's a good reminder that no one has it fully figured out, not even the giants

I've worked at IBM and Microsoft, amd it amazes how everyone is still figuring things out. Part of it is just the nature of how tech is continually growing and evolving, though the other big piece was my thar my expectations didn't meet reality. It's not that other company is missing the market, It's just that life in general is far less concrete than we tend to want to believe. Every bit of life is nothing more than the wizard of Oz behind the curtain yanking levers and pushing buttons.

There's something humbling about realizing that even at places like IBM and Microsoft, people are still figuring it out day by day. I think a lot of us grow up imagining these companies have perfect systems, but they're really just collections of humans making trade offs

Definitely. The red tape can be hefty in big companies, sometimes they’re a well oiled machine and other times they’re very slow and inefficient.

It does feel like a coin toss sometimes, even within the same company across different teams.

What is the best way to begin a transition from a help desk job to an actual career path in IT? I’m getting close to being at my current job for a year, however I have a lot of experience in the tech field, which is what landed me this job without any actual IT background. I definitely feel over qualified and under paid in the position I am in now, and looking for the next step towards an IT career. Any advice would not fall on deaf ears. TIA

Hi everyone, a question to the tech industry at large.

Why are people so hesitant to hire disabled candidates?

I am a visually impaired practitioner in South Africa, with 7 years of experience, and as soon as recruiters or business owners hear/read that I'm disabled, the conversation gets awkward and I never hear from them again.
