Has anyone been able to get into BCG without an MBA? I would be at the PL level, coming from a Big4 firm.

Have worked directly with C-Suite multiple times since I’ve joined ACN Strat. Agree MBB is > but please don’t act like you’re the only one that gets that experience

Yeah not sure why this thread has moved into a comparison around CEO exposure at B4 vs. MBB, when the question is about lateraling w/ no MBA.

The reality is that Partners own the CEO relationship and a PL might present in a meeting where the CEO is there. And not every case involves even the partners talking to the CEO.

Point being ‘ability to interact with the CEO’ is not top of list of what people look for in a new PL.

I have lateraled into BCG at the PL level, I had an MBA but not sure that mattered. What mattered was the experience base I had since I was being hired into a specific practice area.

BCG doesn’t really look to hire external generalist PLs who can’t be presented to clients as having relevant expertise off the bat. The MBA thing I don’t think is that important.

like

PLs are rarely hired in laterally. Customer at MBB is CEOs. Big 4 is a very different league.

like

Again, you’re not coming in at PL level. They are not “your clients” unless you’re bringing them over as part of your book of work. You would come in as an entry level consultant. Maybe a C2

Most of my clients are CEOs (if not they are BU heads within a conglomerate)....granted im on S& side but still Big4...

like

There’s still a difference in how CEOs and the c-suite perceive MBB vs Big 4. It wouldn’t make sense for the Goldman Sachs CEO to hire BCG (or even OW) for a large, important tech implementation given the cost to hire them and the availability of tech expertise at a much more affordable price from Accenture. At OW (and I’m sure similarly at MBB - or at least the one I worked at), part of the strategy we build for customers sometimes includes a recommendation to hire a lower cost but quality implementation consulting team. In my experience, which is of course not universal, this is where the C-suite may typically interact with a B4 firm, but for big changes in strategy or direction, they tend to hire firms who do more strategy work.

like

And before anyone says “I work at _____ B4 firm and we did a massive strategy overhaul for ______”, again, I’m not saying this doesn’t happen, but I would bet it’s far less common, especially for F500 companies.

Working at ACN Strat and current project was bought by 2 CEO-1s. Company is F20.

Project prior to this OB was lead by big pharmaceutical CPO.

OW 1 I am asking because I have seen people move at one level below PL, from PwC.

You’re right, that wasn’t a helpful response - more just responding to the commentary above. I apologize!

BCG2 is correct.
I’d also add that when you come over they might have you do 1-2 projects at a consultant level so you understand how BCG works. I’ve seen that happen but don’t know if it’s required or not

You’ll likely come in one level below where you now are. That sometimes even happens from another MBB. If you do come in above a consultant level, you’ll need to do one or two cases acting in each level from C up to the one you’re coming in it, though you’ll be paid at the level you came in at. Be careful of promises of tenure credit. It can make it hard for reviewers to have enough data points to promote you rather than fire you in the up-or-out system and I’ve seen several instances of promotion timing “promises” not remotely kept

I was interviewed for Principal level at BCG. I did not get it, but that had to do with my performance. You can come in at higher levels as an experienced hire. During my interviews, the partners did mention that when you come in they have you serve in C/PL roles on your first few projects as an experienced hire to understand the BCG approach.

SM what’s your sector?

Hi, I'm leaving Citi in 2 months. It's hard to make this decision. I have an offer from a small startup. In citi, my previous experience was not considered and was reskilled to different tech which is the reason for change.I don't like to exit citi. As I like the company so much. But considering my current knowledge,I am in the middle of the sea.I am afraid now that the new company's offer would be revoked due to this recession?Or can I take back my resignation in citi before the last working day.Is this wise decision?

For questions as to why you are looking to leave your current firm.. I am looking to move because for some reason I am hand-held a lot and given simpler tasks, so I am getting bored and want more challenging / much more fast paced environment. Also kind of bored because I am on one project for a long time and I want exposure to variety of projects. Is this a fair answer or would I be seen as arrogant? Is there a better way to frame my answer?
