I spent about a year building up a personal website (GitHub Pages) where I translated past projects (mostly academic) into blog posts. I formatted some as tutorials and others as project overviews. It was extremely helpful to have, and the process of creating the portfolio also taught me a lot and improved my confidence to talk about my past work and skills in interviews.
Creating that portfolio is so important. I’m sure it is possible to get a job without one, but I’d sure recommend building a portfolio as your top priority. The best thing to do is just look at examples and ask for feedback. Peers and teachers can give you feedback, but I think it is also acceptable to ask for feedback from professionals on forums like LinkedIn. I know I appreciate when a candidate reaches out with something I can engage with instead of asking for a referral when I literally know nothing about them.
Build one on passion projects, or projects related to the job you want. I.e. Basketball or Credit Card fraud.
Don't hire someone to do it, the whole point is to show what you can do
Roadblocks are part of the learning. The single biggest sell you can make is the ability to make a full stack solution. Though I guess getting folks to helping you solve wherever you get stuck on can save you time, yeah. So long as you learn from it.
I didn’t know you can hire a mentor lol
