I think a lot depends on your current cost and standard of living. If you're 50y/o making 50k a year, in a low COL area, sure. Maybe a $1m would work for you to retire early.
If you make 200k in your 30s with kids in a medium or hcol area, that million won't go so far.
Personally, I have about 1.3m invested, am in my early 30s in a hcol area with one child. I still feel stressed over finances. My goal retirement # right now is $5m, but will continue to evaluate as I get a bit older.
