Hi All, My sister has done Computer Science engineering Bachelor degree and has 5 years of work experience in India. She is applying for MBA at https://www.kenan-flagler.unc.edu/programs/mba/full-time-mba/ and https://kelley.iu.edu/programs/full-time-mba/academics/majors-minors/marketing.html. Her overall goal is to get into Software Product management. Any suggestions if any of these MBA’s can open path in the desired space or if she is better of doing an MS in Comp engg. to further develop deeper Technology skills. Thanks

Facebook (Meta) Product Management (IC5) or Google Cloud Marketing S&O/ Annual Planning (L6) role if I want to eventually be working on Product Strategy for consumer tech?
Heard it hard to pivot from Google S&O to Product Strategy even with 20% projects internally…

Companies like Google invest heavily in their people, and you get to be in the leading edge of your industry, and the prestigious logo that will help you make your next move (much better than tier 3). Make the switch to Google and bounce after 2 years to another role within Google or industry.
MBB brand on the resume does help, but it’s not a surefire vector to land great roles - especially when you go beyond strat roles.
The type of ppl that work at an MBB in addition to the alumni is what helps build brand equity. Sundar is McK alum and did some crazy things (Chrome, GDrive, Gmail) at Google to get the job. It’s not because of McK. It’s because he crushed it at Goog.
The McK avg colleague is super intense (relative to industry norms), motivated, ruthlessly pragmatic paired with political skills. Satya and every other exec is the same, McK is just a firm with a cluster of those type of people.
I am fairly familiar with S&O teams at Google. I am a little surprised that you mentioned that WLB is worse there but having said that it varies significantly between the specific teams.
Regarding branding - I am not sure if it’s really that important especially if you have some good brands on your resume already. Also the scale of projects maybe big but ultimately they will be a very very tiny part of the company
That's what I was told, that "it's somewhat like consulting, we work on projects, so expect hours to be longer. We gotta take odd hour calls, have deliverables".
Truthfully, no significant brand on my resume. I've always taken a midcap/boutique kind of role, preferring to play a bigger role in a smaller org.
Sounds like you’re leaning towards staying. What’s your long-term goal? Then evaluate how each of these points and the probability of each, will either get you closer or further away from your goal.
From my POV, taking a pay cut and going into a slow growth role was the worst decisions I’ve made. Branding will help, but to what end? To come back to a smaller tech S&O role again? Wouldn’t you rather stay and growth if that’s the case?
I find it difficult to justify leaving for longer hours and lower pay yes. Long term goal is to rise the corporate ladder. But am hitting a glass ceiling at current level - the best way up is to get an entry people manager role in another mid size (or smaller) tech firm, and establish their S&O function.
But it's not something within my control - it depends on the supply of firms willing to expand and open such a role
I don't think I can get this either by staying or leaving Google in the next 3 years. But if I could use an analogy, I'd rather be a small fish in a big pond, than a small fish in a small pond. The dream is to move up to big fish in small pond, then eventually big fish in big pond?
If you’re anyway at a dead end/glass ceiling role in your current firm, you would rather move to Google for brand name/exits down the line.
While TC is 10% lower, what’s the stock appreciation at your current firm vs Google? That may bridge the gap in your comp, and at least make it even in a year (or less). Unless you’re in a company whose stock is outperforming Google.
Would really help to know which firm you’re at currently.
So what did you decide?
Lower pay & likely worse WLB.... Sounds like a terrible move to me.
If you're able to land a role at Google, you likely don't have a problem with your current experience or skillset.
The job market is constantly changing, if there isn't a role now with the right prestige and salary, wait.
Prior to my current role, I'd never worked in a company larger than 100 people. After 50 job interviews, I somehow managed to land a role with a leading consultancy on a major project. Having been here 6 months I can safely say that they are just as clueless as the much smaller organisations I've worked for. I have zero training budget and zero time to learn anything new. Luckily, I moved here with a large pay rise. I would have taken a pay cut to have this role, looking back I would have massively regretted it.
If you want compensating for your hard work, move into sales.
S&O is mostly a dead end in tech. Product and engineering in tech tend to be much more important and advance to leadership levels. Have you considered trying to pivot into product?
Many routes. Startup product manager, adjacent role such as BA, program manager, any team that is close to the product team in tech. Then show initiative and network your way in. There’s also the top MBA route where you could potentially get it too. All of these require hard work and a bit of luck.
Developer 1 how do you learn these things if you’re starting from scratch?
YouTube and reading.
I follow this basic principle throughout life... If someone says something I don't understand, I try to understanding it by doing my own research.
