Understanding Diversity vs Inclusion

Call to Action:  To become an effective ally, it’s important to understand and define key topics. Take time this week to understand the difference between Diversity vs Inclusion and how the two terms intertwine.

Understanding:

Diversity is the combination of unique skills, experiences, perspectives, and cultural backgrounds that make us who we are. Our diversity as a group benefits our global customers.

Inclusion is about creating an environment where we feel valued, trusted, connected and informed. An inclusive environment enables us to deliver the best results for our customers.

Diversity and Inclusion Together: There are lots of different examples of diversity – gender, age, race, ethnicity, culture, experiences and more. To fully appreciate and benefit from this diversity, leverage the unique talents of our colleagues and deliver for our customers, we need an inclusive environment where everyone feels safe to express their authentic selves. Another way of looking at this is that diversity is the ‘who’ and inclusion is the ‘how’. Diversity is who is in our workforce, and inclusion is how our workforce experiences our workplace.

Have you ever taken a job you know you will hate because you needed the money right away? I have a family to take care of. I don't want to be plowing through our savings for selfish reasons like my mindframe at work, but I don't want to make our lives worse by being miserable. It's a matter of really ruining some of our financial future if we don't get money soon.

Hi everyone! I’d love to hear your thoughts on EEO surveys during the job application process. Is it more beneficial to self-disclose or refrain from disclosing race, gender, disability, etc?

Which method is more likely to get your application noticed? Any guidance would be helpful on my job hunt. Thank you.

Hi - I am a career pivot from higher education into tech and have final round interviews for a DEI Coordinator role (which I'm super excited for). I am meeting with three people that I would be partnering with for the job and it was shared with me that these interviews will mainly be behavioral as well as questions on my technical skills. Does anyone have any resources to help me prepare for this? Anything is greatly appreciated!

In honor of National Voter Registration Day, The New Yorker released the transcript of a previously unpublished interview with James Baldwin, who gave a first-hand account of "Freedom Day 1963," a Black voter-registration drive in Selma, Alabama. Baldwin's descriptions from that day are so vivid and detailed that you can feel the fear and anger of the event. If you have a couple of minutes, I highly recommend you read it.

I am frustrated as a Gay Woman who has given her all for 30+ years grinding to be the best. I have been in closet, out of closet, in-between and am tired of it. I want to be VALUED as a human being. I have gone from Rock Star to problem when people "found out". I have trained and promoted hundreds of people and been passed over for promotions because of not being a man. I have trained men with less experience, worse results only for them to move forward. If Diversity is important...prove it!

Working at a company and they can’t seem to hold on to their female, black and people of color employees. I blinked and 3 of the people who were in my onboarding class were either fired or they left. For context I’ve been in company less than a year and there are people who have been in the company 25yrs. I’m thinking of cutting loose before it gets to my turn.

My company has ERGs and one of them is pretty large and includes a lot of demographics. Within it, people are starting to kind of form their own subgroups (like based on office location or country-specific ethnicity). Definitely took the wrong job. I was offered a seriously competitive salary and great benefits to work at a well funded startup, which is great! Turns out the salary and benefits were meant as lowkey bribes to insure I worked at the company without actually doing any work. Every single suggestion I've made has been shut down and I've been ghosted for several meetings with the CEO. What should I do? Just leave?

How do I transition from a Senior Executive Assistant role to Project Management? Ideally I would like to work in tech. How should I go about this? I currently work in the Real estate industry so it would be a totally new career path. The reason I want to move into tech is I feel like many of the companies I see have the same values as me (diversity & inclusion) and a good culture is so important to me.

My company is in need of a update online, could use your opinions! We need to better showcase our culture (caring, supportive, fun, intelligent IT industry leaders) as well as diversity. We are predominantly white still but making strides to improve here. What’s the best way to approach? I don’t want to seem disingenuous or that we are singling out our diverse employees (asking for photos). We have a remote and on-site workforce about 350+ EEs. Non white EEs make up about 35% of the company rn.
