Act like it is until told otherwise :) talk to folks in the role and have them help you - most folks can do any job at any consulting firm, it’s not like medicine or law. Good luck!

If I do try to get in, will I have to start at the bottom or is there some amount of experience which could be transferable

Sure. Give it a try. Worst is that the firm will start you off at a conservative level so that you can get up to speed with their core consulting expectations, tools, and methods.

Since George Floyd's murder and the sudden Corporate America "wokeness," I (black guy) have been routinely contacted by unacquainted Partners who explicitly state something to the effect "Client X wants diversity, so we'd like you on this deal..." It really comes across as tone deaf and completely patronizing. I appreciate the efforts to diversity (albeit forced), but Partners really need to learn how to not be so supercilious in the approach. You don't have to overtly state that I'm the quota.

Has anyone else found HR timelines to be a crawl during all of this year? Top 5 bank or smaller bank, it’s totally glacial pace, it doesn’t matter. I try to normally be engaged and quick with stuff client side or internal stuff but it truly blows my mind how slow HR is on things. Like if I was to be this slow client side, I’d be fired. Does anyone have similar experiences over the past year?

Back again with a question for the McKinsey folks! 1. Is it true that if you are internal (specifically PD) you are not eligible for a performance bonus? Just base and the 401K profit sharing? 2. I know McKinsey offers a percentage of your salary into a retirement fund. The recruiter painted it as a range (from 7-12%), but other fish in the main consulting bowl said it’s either 7 OR 12% (no in between) based off of if you’re client facing or internal - which is true? Anyone feel like they are conditioned to always try harder, do better, etc? I'm having such a hard time dialing it back (I want to do this for my own mental health). I want to be okay with just being average, but it's like I'm working against myself...I don't know if it's just a consulting thing, but it's taking A LOT of effort, and I hate feeling like I'm letting ppl down, but ppl let me down all the time lol.

First time leaving firms - not sure what to do with my 401k. Should I keep it as it is, transfer to an IRA, or a Roth IRA. If it is the latter, I know Roth IRA has a 6k limit but my 401k has ~17k. Will it exceed the limit and if so, what should I do? 22 here, not too familiar with the process. Thanks!

Maybe a strange take but I think that we should be more in touch with our internal bodies. We can send astronauts to the moon and rovers to mars but there’s no easy, portable way to scan our bodies to see what’s going on inside (e.g., a DIY full body xray or MRI). I think this could be the next gen of weighing scales that also show various health metrics, track fitness, etc. It could help with prevention and diagnosis. I guess it’s bad for health providers who make $ today from this. Thoughts?

2nd year associate here (going into my third). Will have about 114k in student loan debt at the turn of the year. I have roughly 60k in my investment account, 45k in 401k and an adequate balance in my emergency fund. I also contribute to my HSA and will cross the threshold for investing that in January. During 0% on student loans i have been using every spare dine to pay that down. My question is should that continue or should I tone that back and start investing more? Cont’d in comments...
