Hey dads - not a dad myself but need some advice for my dad. My dad is about to lose his mother (my grandmother). My dad and I don’t really connect on a deep level, but I can tell he is hurting and this is going to be rough for him. Any advice on what I can do for him? Anything your kids did when you lost your parent that comforted you?

One thing I regret is not trying to record stories from my grandparents for everyone to listen to later. What I wouldn't give to hear those stories again. If possible, it might be something to consider doing.

I'm really sorry to hear that. I wish I had a better thought that could help, but that's the best I got for ya

Reflect on the positive memories you had with your grandmother and how that helped shape / impact your life. Particularly if there are memories the three of you share. Honestly, just openly stating implied things “I know this is tough. I’m here if you need it. I love you. Etc.” can go a long way.

Be there with him during the process. Take LoA you may even qualify for FMLA. I brought my children into the intensive care when my mother was near death we held hands together as a family and with her. She was lucid and happy and passed the next day. My children had speaking roles at her service. It’s rough best you can do is stick together as a family and help each other through it

A partner asked me if I was planning on having a 2nd child. We are a small, close firm, so it wasn’t a weird question for us. I told him no, and that it had to do with my husband’s age/health (47 with multiple health issues, I’m 32.) But the real reason is that, while I love my firm, and though it’s clear the partners want to believe they are family-friendly, I felt completely unsupported as a mother once my son was no longer a newborn.
