Hey guys! So I’m starting to get interest in joining the FAAS sector within EY. My recruiter is asking me which part I would like to join, Finance or core/commercial. Does anyone have any insight on which might be better for growth, hours, work life balance etc? Would love to hear your thoughts EY

I would do finance (guessing that means FSO?) I'm in core FAAS and unfortunately it's so general that you might get stuck doing something pretty boring and annoying. It largely depends on what projects there are based on the current needs of clients...so you might be doing a lot of engagement admin/management, simple accounting on leases, etc., while the folks in FSO or TAAG do all the complex/technical work where you'd learn a ton more (and it's 10x more interesting.)

There's also been a ton of turnover this past year and feel like a few "bad" people slipped through the cracks in CORE, but everyone I see in TAAG/FSO is so smart and knows their stuff. I don't want to get too much in detail and complain about my current projects, and obviously everyone's experience is different so take mine with a grain of salt, but I don't plan on staying in CORE much longer than I have to. Keep in mind that FAAS is nothing like audit (at least it's nothing like my audit experience)...so someone's experience in audit likely doesn't mean much for FAAS

In Finance you will be working with banks, insurance, assets managers etc. It’s a different world and once you get specialized, you can be valuable after a few years of experience, because not everyone has it. But the other side is that your profile might be less versatile after that.

For work life balance, my experience is that banks and insurance are usually big structure, so they have usually an adequate staffing and might be better organized, which means better WLB. Projects are really interesting though, because regulatory and tech are making the sector really challenged and bound to evolve. Then again, the other side is that it’s the kind of company which are slow to react, so depending on your project you might feel a certain inertia.

All that is based on my own experience, but I’ve been working at different role with banks, insurance and assets managers most of my career, so I guess I’ve learned a thing or two.

Hope that helps. I’m currently in FAAS and quite happy to have made the move, so I hope you’ll like it!

And good luck you @PWC it sounds like there’s a lot of opportunity in that space so I’m hopefully you’ll find something soon

What is the finance sector? Was thinking of trying to switch to FAAS, but never heard of them doing anything finance related

She says there’s open positions working Finance FAAS for wealth & Asset Management, fin tech, and insurance

Glad to see you know where your view stands thanks for your in our brother

FSO is the finance sector, we don’t really do finance in FAAS tho

Are you certain you want to work exclusively in financial services? If so, join FSO. If not, go commercial/non-fso

It kind of all depends. Long terms I would like to move into the transaction diligence side of advisory which they say I need a few more years of exp. But I’m also taking my masters and I don’t want to get too bombarded with finance deadlines/hours. I did hear that core/comm hours are actually pretty good!

I was FSO audit and moved to Central FAAS. The culture is way better in Central FAAS, but in terms of hours it's very engagement team specific because of the client needs, of course.

Thanks for your insight ey3, if you don’t mind. Do you think you can tell me your level and pay? They asked me for a pay range but I didn’t give them one just yet. I passed all my cpas, starting my mba, and have about 4 month exp in pwc. I feel like I can ask for a solid salary based on their needs and my credentials

Hi, I’m fairly new to corporate America with only several years of experience in financial services. I’m a Black female having difficulty navigating a white, male dominated field. Can someone share advice on navigating the office politics while being a POC? My question is specifically about asking tough questions to senior management. Is there specific “etiquette” to follow?
