FWIW- I proposed a $55 hourly rate. I have almost 20 years of experience, including journalism, and most of it in-house. Honestly, I was offended at the $400 retainer, but admit I’ve been in low spirits due to the job market. Am I overreacting?
With 20 years of experience even your hourly rate is low. I stopped taking freelance work last year when my actual day job got too busy to sustain freelance gigs, but my rate was $175/hr for projects less than 5 hours. Anything over 5 hours, I’d price out as a package. If you need the funds, it’s something but $400/month is a lowball. If you take it, make sure you have clear guardrails around what they’d get at base for that amount, quantified so expectations are clear.
