Check out Julian Cole’s planning dirty resources for lots of planner wisdom.
One thing it took me a while to learn is that different tasks need different types of briefs. Briefing a big brand refresh campaign, well you probably need a big brand insight. Briefing a big cultural moment, we’ll you’ll need more cultural insight. Briefing a :60s instructional video, you probably don’t need fancy strategic footwork. You just need to make the ask as simple and clear as possible and get out of the way.
Identify what the task at hand is and then pull in the information that seems relevant to that task. This is where brief templates fall down when they are treated as gospel vs a list of sections you may or may not need.
Take a look at @markpollard on IG and would recommend his book Strategy is Your Words. He also runs a strategy resource site and podcast called Sweathead.
Oooh there’s some great books! junior by Thomas Kemeny, the practical pocket guide to account planning, hey whipple (kinda basic but really fun read and most strategy classes made me read it lol). As far as workshops, I took a good one with Planning Dirty Academy! They have so many resources
The On Strategy Showcase podcast has been helpful for me to understand how to dissect a client challenge and translate that into compelling briefs/creative
Ask your manager they should be training you
This is a very controversial opinion but def try out Mark Pollard’s strategy course!
I've seen overly lengthy debates on this person... Is he THAT polarizing, what is it that irks people so much about him?
I'm on the fence and need a level-headed explanation.
Merci beaucoup!
