Equal opportunity doesn’t mean equal interest in the job. I’m totally sure there’s a ton of people on the spectrum though, just on the more functioning side
I’ve had several coworkers who are on the spectrum or disabled. Honestly you might work with more than you think. Many people don’t openly talk about disabilities, particularly invisible ones. For example, I’ve had a chronic illness since childhood and I don’t discuss it at work.
We have a deaf co worker she uses the cc option for meetings , we do them all on teams so she can read what we say
If you want to meet more people who fall under the “others” I would encourage you to join your firms ERGs as an ally. Deloitte specifically has a “Disability Pride and Allys” group which focuses on bringing visibility to disabled people (ex military PTSD, born with illnesses, deaf etc.). It is really eye opening and I feel it just makes the working environment overall better for everyone involved.
I agree w KPMG 1 people might not feel comfortable talking about their “other” identity on a day to day at work
How would you make reasonable accommodation for a blind accountant who should be able see the numbers? How do make reasonable accommodation to a deaf accountant who can not attend calls? Both of these scenarios would probably requiring putting burden on someone else. Someone on the spectrum or with mobility disabilities- I can see this being more common with remote work
I’m also ADHD and realizing this was probably the worst career choice. Some types of ADHD thrive in this environment though. Unfortunately, a ADHD is looked down upon right now IMO. Too many have been diagnosed with it. I think there will need to be a range carved for functional vs nonfunctional like there is for autism. On the spectrum adhd? I find many people who have ADHD don’t seem to have personal accountability - I forget to do this at work, I am always late and it’s because of my adhd, I need my job to be more flexible etc etc. but it comes down to - can you do your job or not?
I am disabled and was effectively told to leave my big 4 firm and find a more 'suitable' job for someone with a disability.
Were you able to perform your work duties with your disability? As long as you have then that’s insane!
I had a friend that was hearing impaired and he performed very well at B4.
No, I don't wonder. It will always be that way
If I were blind or deaf im not sure id wanna work in accounting. In fact, I'm not sure I'd wanna work period.
They can receive disability benefits and probably wouldn’t want a stressful job like accounting
