How can I talk to the CFO about boundaries? He does this weird thing where he gets close to employees, so he can stare into their eyes. He is checking for discoloration that might indicate if they're high. This is usually something he does with the warehouse crew. I explained to him what random drug testing really means, so he can't demand drug tests because someone's eyes look weird. But he still does this.

Talk to him about liability exposure. I doubt he’s trained in identifying indicators of drug use. Every time he tries to catch someone being high he exposes the company to liability. Not to mention how uncomfortable he likely makes employees by violating their personal space. What if someone interprets his behavior as sexual harassment? Bruh needs to stop. If he suspects something, report it to HR and let them deal with it.

The other thing to point out here is that he clearly doesn't trust his employees if he thinks they're all high. Colleagues will spot this and the trust will decline, as will the psychological safety and then you have colleagues hiding and faking. Increased turnover will follow for sure. As a CFO he will know the cost of that.

At a basic level, I'd ask him if he trusts his colleagues. If he says yes, then you can highlight that he's giving all the wrong signals. And if he says no...well then that's a clear problem

Have you tried giving him a list of the things that are legally permitted to be considered before doing reasonable suspicion testing (which is what he's trying to do, not random testing)?

New fish looking for career guidance.

I'm a corporate recruiter with 3 years of experience. Finishing my degree in HRM 5/2022. I'm thinking of getting my SHRM -CP shortly after graduation.

I'm not sure of where to go after that, but I doubt I will stick with recruiting or my current firm.

Has anyone here started off in recruiting and branched out to other HR functions? Do you like your new role? Do you wish you stuck with recruiting?
