I did MBA night classes while working FT. My wife went into labor with our second when I was taking an exam. It was tough but we got through it. I was working corporate at the time, though. Not sure I could have done it if I was in consulting at the time.
I did it OP.. would go 2 days without spending anytime with my kid. My wife was an angel and held the fort.. gets difficult, but that was the only way I thought I could break a ceiling (comp wise) and change lanes (industries).
Only misery that accompanies MBA is debt. Working 70+ hours with kids at home can be difficult. Still struggle with that one.
If getting an MBA while working full time...man, I cannot imagine. Assume PTMBA?
I got my masters...not MBA but Computer Science and I worked full time. I can’t imagine doing it with kids, especially young ones.
I did my MS in CompSci as well. I took it slow. 1 or 2 classes per semester in the evening until it was done, so one or two nights a week. I had two kids, 7 and 4, plus one on the way. My son was born the day after a midterm. The wife was a champ.
Then again, I also don't work 70 hours a week. That's just nuts.
BCG1 - was it worth it though? Did you feel you picked up any useful skills through the MBA that you would not have otherwise picked up through a full time job? I mean I know it does open up a lot more avenues in terms of career paths (e.g. MBB), but would you have done anything differently when you look back?
I misread the original—I didn’t work the 70 while in MBA, only after. Had friends make it work, but they all were effective at time-boxing their job while taking classes (e.g. 40-50 hours max). The weekend is really your friend, but the week can suck (almost no chance to see kids)
Also, weekend MBA might be an option. That way you have enough time each day to see kids, though you do sacrifice the ability to do full-day events
You weekends will be tied up doing coursework. Depending on your priorities you don’t get that time back with your kids.
My wife has an MBA and she’s part of an Leadership program, I’m a SC with an MBA and MS, traveling M-T and we have a 2.5y kid and one is coming... we have to figure it out... in Mexico we said... “Esto es de huevos”...
NPV of MBA goes down over time. Go full time. Finances are daunting but you’ll have way more time for kids, have a way better experience, and not kill yourself in the process.
Try your wife in school too while your doing your MBA - I’m doing it this Fall...and I’m in the military part time. I’m sort of dreading it.
Eyes on the prize.. that’s what kept us going..
S1 - Did you move to industry?
Did my PMBA (3 year program, night classes) while working in FP&A in banking. My kid was born in year 2. I have no memory of about 8 months of my life. Lack of sleep, work, school. Got divorced by the end of MBA. Now I’m a salesforce consultant, remarried to a fitness instructor, and I see my kid every other weekend.
