I'm piggybacking here for suggestions. I have a manager who not only expects prompt response at 9 PM but, treats me like his personal assistant and makes me do admin work like accepting track changes. And, when asked he says that I agreed to this. I was told there would be some admin work (around 40%) some days but, 100% of the work is admin right now. I started at this job about 2-3 months ago and I get migraines every day from extreme stress. Said manager also retaliated when I asked for more substantive legal work and threatened to fire me. Also, he wants me to go through him if anyone else wants any help from me on actual legal issues, keeps me out of the loop, etc. I clearly don't see a career progression here but, don't want to quit without another offer at hand cause I moved for this job and I'm also afraid of looking like I can't last at a job. Is this kind of behavior normal? I used to love law now I hate the profession.
This is in-house. I am equally surprised that they are having a qualified attorney do something a junior high grad can do, for an attorney’s salary. It’s really mismanaged. I’m just surprised how someone can go at length to convince someone how great this workplace is and hire them and really not give them any tools to succeed or even any proper work. The micromanagement is next level, I was told I had to earn their trust by showing them my ability to create templates in word and converting pdf to word, using MS-office, docusign etc. I want to cry everyday or not care but, I can’t. I don’t want to not grow at my job.
I also recently learned a higher up has a financial fraud judgment against them and that’s not a big deal at all. This person manages the companies’ financial department. 🤣
I need to get out and save myself. I can’t believe this is real life and not some cheeky soap opera.
This all sounds so similar...it's crazy
In the past week or so I’ve come up with so many ideas to start a support group, switch career etc. Historically, I’ve always had great supervisors who let me learn and challenged me, they trusted my abilities to get the job done. In the past I handled multiple multi-million dollar deals now I can’t even be sure if I can use word properly. I can’t believe people like this exist or are in leadership positions. 😭
I’m sorry you’re dealing with this! I’m in an odd position and can somewhat relate. I’m the middle manager dealing with a boss who is a micromanager and doesn’t have enough visibility into others on the team. I’m trying to manage my supervisor to be more trusting of our team while also giving more opportunities for the team to gain visibility. What some (bad) managers don’t understand is that visibility doesn’t always equate to productivity...especially in this remote world we are now in.
I suggest leaving or having a very direct conversation with your manager. It doesn’t sound like there’s enough trust or comfort in your relationship however. It looks like leaving will be your best option.
I’m sorry you’re dealing with this and it’s affecting your physical health.
How long have you been there? This could be an issue with your supervisor not being able to keep track of their own stuff and/or someone above him/her breathing down his/her neck.
It could be that the supervisor is looking for a reason to give you the boot, but that’s less likely.
It could be the supervisor is getting ready to level you up to the next level of work and wants to better focus on how you are handling specific issues right now to confirm you are ready for that.
Could be other things, too.
Could also be that the supervisor is worried you are now competition.
Leave especially if you aren’t getting paid enough for that sort of sh*t
Haha had this but with a 20 minute response time. Echo everyone else - leave.
While leaving is an option, is it also possible to switch groups or managers? I’ve know folks to do that in house due to horrible managers.
I have a partner who wants bi-weekly updates on matters I’m working on for her. I’m fine with that but a zoom call no way.
