From my experience, I left the firm. I literally left the firm a month ago and now have a happier workplace where I am valued and respected genuinely.
I told one of my office partners (who clearly wasn’t supportive of my career in the firm) to her face before I left, “I’m not going to play this game. If I like you, I will like you. If I don’t like you, I will not pretend to like you.”
Ask yourself this question: “if you cannot advance to your next promotion due to politics and you hit a wall in the firm, do you really want to stay there?” I made my answer and left that shithole.
No... I was in assurance, which arguably is worse than consulting in terms of longer hours, more people to put up with (clients included), and lower salary.
I’ve never been good at politicking, curious to see what others say. I mostly run to the next opp and blindly hope the same thing doesn’t play out (which it always does). You could also go into a technical heavy role/function where merit is prioritized
