Once a year. Only exception I make is when a signed a client late in the year. For example, I signed a client in October 2024. I *could* bump them this October, but I’d rather wait till the new year to make it cleaner.
We have monthly check-ins, so probably in our October check in this year (bc it’s the start of Q4), I’ll tell them that we’ve had a great year, remind them of all the good work we’ve done, ask for opportunities for improvement—a general check in during which I remind them that they love me, they receive value from me, and they are welcome to offer better ways of working—then I’ll tell them that my rates will be raising to match inflation / what my services command on the market / pick your reason.
I’ll remind them that this is to ensure I can continue to dedicate my time and focus to them, then I’ll tell them what they’re being raised to. I’ll lean heavily on that last part.
Then I’ll tell them what they’re raising to, which in my case will be something like +5-10%, rounded up or down to come to a nice even number. Clients like nice even numbers.
It was nerve wracking to do at first, but that changed when I realized clients expect it. They do it to their own clients, why wouldn’t they expect you to?
