How do you decide when to raise your rates? I’ve been doing this long enough to know I’m undercharging, but every time I bring it up, I panic about scaring clients off. Would love to hear how others navigated that jump.

Once a year. Only exception I make is when a signed a client late in the year. For example, I signed a client in October 2024. I *could* bump them this October, but I’d rather wait till the new year to make it cleaner.

We have monthly check-ins, so probably in our October check in this year (bc it’s the start of Q4), I’ll tell them that we’ve had a great year, remind them of all the good work we’ve done, ask for opportunities for improvement—a general check in during which I remind them that they love me, they receive value from me, and they are welcome to offer better ways of working—then I’ll tell them that my rates will be raising to match inflation / what my services command on the market / pick your reason.

I’ll remind them that this is to ensure I can continue to dedicate my time and focus to them, then I’ll tell them what they’re being raised to. I’ll lean heavily on that last part.

Then I’ll tell them what they’re raising to, which in my case will be something like +5-10%, rounded up or down to come to a nice even number. Clients like nice even numbers.

It was nerve wracking to do at first, but that changed when I realized clients expect it. They do it to their own clients, why wouldn’t they expect you to?

You’re not just a Graphic Designer. You’re a business. You get to act like it.

I’m curious why more non-US citizens interested in FIRE don’t go live in a no/low tax jurisdiction even for a few years e.g. Dubai, some Caribbean islands. I get that some people will have family circumstances (e.g. elderly parents to look after) so it won’t be possible for them, but for a significant proportion it will be an option

Can someone help me with this? I had a low utilization since pandemic, I.e., ~sub 5%, but never missed any payments. Would credit score be impacted if only one line of credit with a low utilization?

Too few accounts currently paid as agreed

Scores consider the number of accounts that are paid as agreed. Your score was impacted because the number of these accounts is too low, or because you've missed payments recently on some of your accounts.

How much is the pay for data roles in the UK? I'm a data analyst with 2 years of experience and a Masters degree in Data Analysis. I have a decent project portfolio in data science. Any advice on how to get clients to pay your invoice on time / what to do when they don't? I'm currently working with an agency who agreed to net 30 terms, but has been late with every invoice so far...It's probably a lost cause on this particular job, but Im wondering if there's anything I can do in the future to avoid this situation. Does anyone charge a fee when invoices aren't paid on time? Or is this just par for the freelance life?

Quick PSA: one of the perks of going in-house, is that you’re no longer at an ad agency and all that that entails.

Just started a new in-house tech fl gig and it’s giving me whiplash! Somehow this dept has brought every person/toxic behavior from their old agency just to a new environment. Nowhere is perfect but good god. I honestly think companies/HR could learn a lot about their depts from freelancers.

I’ve been a freelance print production designer for many years, and usually on-site in the before times. Now I work remote, and am finding it uneasy dealing with billing. Before I always billed hourly, which made sense, but it’s becoming an issue now. Some companies don’t have a full days’ work, so it seems wrong to bill full days, and it allows me to juggle projects for different companies, but my billable hours are down. I know I should bill a daily rate, but not sure that will fly. Thoughts?
