If the interview and my portfolio are not enough for you to make a decision then I think you either need more experience or more confidence. We are both taking a risk and our time is equally valuable.
Yahoo(!) tried to pull that shit on me. I told them they could pay my freelance rate, like everyone else, i.e., I took myself out of the running.
used to think they were useful but have seen that most leaders don't know how to put together a task brief that gets them the answers they need but don't cause too much work ... too old for the hoopla these days
Based on bad experiences in the past, I think it's imperative.
If it's to understand your process, then great. If it's to see how you work in a team, great. Otherwise, seems like a waste of time to me.

I've seen too many people put work in their books that's not necessary theirs, so I can understand why it happens. It's annoying, though. I guess as long as it's not something they could potentially use and it isn't very time consuming, I'll do it
Absolutely impertive. Old agency used to make entry level folks take a 10? media math test. Was the best filter for competence I've ever had. If I have 2-3 strong candidates I'll give them a quick 10-15 slide project to see how they organize their thoughts, develop strategy, and what their quality of work looks like.
