Hmmmm. That's tough. I've found those types don't really respond well to criticism and can challenge notes for improvement. Is there any chance you could sit them down, remind them of the goals of a particular project and kindly dictate how they didn't meet those goals. Like "Hey, we expected to have XYZ, and your output was XY. In order to achieve this or that, we need work that is ________" Like humbly bringing them down a notch. Could even show them past campaigns so they see where they are missing the mark
Great idea! I’ll try that on Monday
I know exactly the feeling and it’s a pain in the *ss. The only thing that worked for me has been asking them in a very friendly and nice way “How do you want feedback, moving forward?”. It’s signals that you respect them, that your open to collaboration but more importantly establishing the hierarchy
Great way to still assert power but in a collaborative and non threatening way.
So far giving them praise and positive reinforcement like we do to the rest of the group did not work. They just sarcastically say “I know” in response. They act like they’re extremely good and so far only gave us the bare minimum in reviews and it’s all quite mediocre.
Meeting title on the calendar: “Working together”
The in-person meeting:
Have a box of doughnuts ready. Boston creme, glazed, powdered creme, etc.
“Hey [Acey-Dee], thanks for coming. Have a doughnut!
“I genuinely believe you have talent. But lately I noticed the level of your work has been slipping. I wanted to ask if everything is ok. I am here to help you and want to make sure you are ok.”
[They respond, and you make sure they are ok.]
“So there’s something else I want to address. When I give you feedback, when you say things like ‘I know,’ it comes across as aggressive. It makes my job harder. How would you like feedback? I want to be able to have a conversation about this…”
