Wait... how much are they paying you that you think retirement is even on the cards for you in your 20s? 🤣🤣 have you tried buying a house yet? That'll bring you to a whole new level of cynicism.
Yeah I'm 31 and just bought my first place a few months ago on a single income (I'm grateful to even be able to do that). I'm making a HUGE bet that I'll need it (or use the growth from it in a few years...) if i magically stop being so single. And if that doesn't pan out for me well... I hope it's still a sound investment. Who knows.
I'm not waiting until I have mobility issues to do the things I want to do in life.
But my point is... why wait to experience the things that I want to in this world.
I'm not that excited by the idea, to be honest. I know people who are retired and they're kind of miserable. I think the best situation would be to be involved in the kind of work you find interesting enough that it would be good to keep going. Maybe be able to take time off to travel a lot, but not be sitting around looking for things to do just to stay amused.

I would rather have the ability to retire and feel freer at work to do what I like

haha enjoy this time to build good healthy relationships while preparing, financially, for your retirement. If you are in your 20s, and save 30% of your take home, you should be able to retire near 50 very comfortably or earlier! Just be sure you understand where you are saving the money. I recommend Roth accounts so you can pull contributions.
Thinking of working for 40 more years is sometimes a challenge. This is where liking your job at least a little is very important. Very excited to retire.
Also retirement would bore the crap out of me... I need a retirement hustle hahaha.
Sounds about right for the lazy entitled no work ethic generation that getting fired at record rates. What are you so excited about, the ability to sit in your mom’s basement all day playing video games while snarfing down cheesy-poofs?
If you want to retire early, you’re in the wrong profession. 😂
go back to the nursing home, boot licker
I’m retired at 57, but wish I could get back into work

Oh I'm the same way and I'm ready for it! Just need the money lol
Well I have to say I'm really excited about retirement. I really liked what I did early on and thought that it helped exercise my brain. Unfortunately industry is such that truly utilizing smart people is too risky. So eventually you start getting the feeling that your potential is wasted. I do look back on what I've done and realize that some people gave me the shot to work on some cool stuff. I am also grateful that I could study what I enjoyed and make a comfortable living doing it. But as I get older I realize that there are so many other things that are cool in the world and tech is just a small part. So I'm happy with what I've accomplished but now it's a newer person's time.
In a word YES, its bad.
I knew somebody who said he had working from the age of 16 and at 30ish was ready to retire. Unless you have the financial means, he and you are in for a long rough ride. I retired at age 59 but not because I was well off. I worked for Anmazon but started that last year they offered a stock incentive to the rank-and-file. My last child graduated and joined the Army so my post-divorce child support came to an end and a few months later I finally received that one stock. Without the stock incentive and some looming issues I decided to retire thinking I had enough savings to supplement my government pension until age 62 and qualification for Social Security retirement. But I then tried to get my teeth strenghtened, both my computers experienced failures, and I donot recall but I think I had car failures. So I went looking for work again! I got paid to learn s/w engineering but my assigned platform was not popular and was laid off. Its a long, tough road to retirement and lots can go wrong. You really have to be prepared finaincially. I live on fixed income, but like most of my carer I either lacked time or monetayry resources to pursue projects and ideas related to my electrical engineering degree. BTW as a once civil servant, I went all the way to the US Supreme COurt on an issue that, near and dear to my heart regarding competent and objective civil service work, I was opposing a decision in which a state civil servant didn't bother to review documented evidence that showed I earned a regular weekly amount that was not random pay given in arbitrary amounts on the days payments were made. But it was an unemployment insurance issue and so you can guess what people automatically conclude about that issue!
I can't wait to golf
Seriously?! When at my 20’s, I was so excited to learn everything but got paid! Never thought about retirement at all! I had a very good time working on designing and coding everyday. Even 20-30 years down the road, am still very exciting on working. And yes, there is stress, but that is my interest. My guess is you’re not working in your right field, your right interest?! You’ve selected the wrong field to study and work?
My first two years in corporate were torture but now that I’ve been domesticated it’s not too bad. Hang in there. Or get a job you can stand.
Like a lot of people at my work the closer we get to retirement the more hesitant we get. It's a masive drop in income for almost everyone and lots of time to fill.
If you are in your 20's you have to think about how the world will change the next 60 years. Be prepared for it.
I am 61, I have either 4 or 6 years till I can retire. My retirement will be fun I hope. Actual date of retirement will depend on health and money. 65 if i am not healthy. 67 if healthy and can get the better SS allowance.
