Any insight into STB’s tax group?
Our Philadelphia-area boutique firm whose practice works exclusively with nonprofits and charities is hiring due to growth. Tax is the basis of Exempt Org work. That is why I am posting here. Great practice working to further charitable missions of our clients. Good WLB (1300 hour billable requirement). Opportunity for the right person to work remotely. Very difficult but not impossible. It took me a year, a colleague a month, and another has been looking for 1.5years now.
Work consists of reviewing agreements, tax opinions
Did you directly apply or use a recruiter?
Really depends on your credentials and the availability of tax positions in your area. Law firms will, of course, always want to make room for more senior associates, those with prior law firm experience, those who graduated top of their class, etc.
Tax transactional at a law firm differs in that you obviously aren’t working with excel. There’s more overlap with general commercial matters (like doc review, contracts, etc).

Not personal experience but I’ve heard it is office and practice group dependent. As in individuals in the national offices are likely to have an easier time making the transition.
A colleague looked for a whole year before landing on a law firm. I’m still looking…
Took me 7 years. Did international tax for 5 years and law firms didn’t take my experience seriously. Might be because I’m midsize market. I switched to a financial analysis firm for 2 years and seemed to get more traction that way.
Are you still in international tax? If not, what area did you transition to? Also, what did you do at the financial analysis firm?
Why making the change?
A4, I get the pay issue. But hours are not likely to be any better in a law firm and law firm life is going to be all consulting?
I did about a decade ago. If you’re in a speciality group in Big4, I think it’s a bit easier. I’ve found that most law firms do value tax attorneys who have the accounting background.
