Starting a new job at Applied Materials on Monday as a Manufacturing Engineer III. It would be great for his career and they are giving the 15% jump in base he asked for, however they won’t share what the target bonus amount would be. It’s an executive director position, so I would assume it’s a decent target bonus, but without that in writing it could honestly be a gift basket at the end of the year. Transitioning from com. lit into tax controversy?

I have a tax LLM and started my career out of law school doing M&A tax at a big4. After 9 months, I got out of big4 transactional hell and into whatever litigation I could find. I now practice commercial lit but would welcome the opportunity to eventually transition into tax controversy (which I wasn’t able to do before). Does my commercial litigation “break” hurt my prospect? How long can I stay in com lit without hurting my chances even more?

Any other junior tax lawyers here feeling discouraged by how steep the learning curve is? 🥲 I started remotely too and training has not been the best…

Has anyone made the jump from the tax group of an AmLaw 100 firm to a Big 4 tax group? I have questions.

Has anyone dealt with stuffing allocation in a non-hedge fund context? It seems even in the HF world the law is fuzzy in using aggregate reverse 704c principles in stuffing allocations. Like, sure, the market is there but no authority really blessed it (other than some Cravath partner’s article in Tax Notes in 2013). If we are talking asset class that isn’t really like marketable securities but might be able to treat it similarly solely by virtue of, say, valuation on a quarterly basis (contd)

Hi all! I’m applying to NYU tax llm and I’m pretty confident I can get in,but it’s unlikely I’ll receive a scholarship. I’m working at a non big4 consulting firm for about 1.5yrs now, doing mainly international with some M&A exposure. I want to do llm because I still want to shoot for biglaw. I have a small kid so it’ll be hard to do the program part time. Should I quit my current job and enroll full time? Meaning lose 1yr salary and taking on a job security risk. TIA!
