Try to think of your stats from the perspective of the business school. They report their average class gmat score and GPA every year, so naturally they want to maximise those numbers. The average GPA they post doesn’t take into account what your major was; if you got a 2.9 in chemical engineering, it’s still a 2.9, and will bring down the average, just like a 4.0 in something like vocal performance would raise their average. That’s why a high GPA helps no matter what you studied. That said, your major likely provides context and reassurance to a program that you have skills in certain areas (e.g., as a math major, they probably trust that you could handle the quant portion of the degree).
