My 16 year old daughter just applied for a job at a business owned by a former student, who is now 50. She had me for 7th grade ELA in 1988-89. Thirty-seven years later, I now have 25 days to work before retiring at 61.
Way to go!!! Congrats and best wishes!
I'm the other way around, teaching is my second career. I was in the Army for almost 12 years, I loved it but when I got hurt in Iraq I couldn't stay in. When I was asked what I wanted my second career to be, teaching was the only thing I wanted to do.
I’ve been teaching for 5 years, and I already feel that tug sometimes. It’s rewarding, but it can also wear you down. I think it’s totally normal to reassess, especially when those little life moments hit you hard. Doesn’t mean you have to leave, but it’s worth exploring what else you may be interested in.
I didn’t feel really old until:
The realization that your first students are grandparents before you are…and those kids may in your class soon.
A student I had my first year teaching graduated from collage 4 years later and returned as a teacher….and is retiring before me.
Not laughing at you, laughing with you. Bless you and Thank you! 😊
Im already in year 20 and have taught my students kids, and had former students be my peer and boss. It was weird the first few times it's whatever now
Fifty-three (53) years here and looking forward to #54.
Year 36 here. I have had many “grandstudents” I taught my school’s principal swim lessons when he was 5…he has grey hair now! I am retiring in 18 days, and my replacement is a former student.
I have been teaching for 35 years… Retired from full time in 2018, then recruited by a former student in 2022 to teach part-time at a Charter.
No interview needed… Principal was a former student. My SpEd aid is a former student. Our Office Manager is a former student. Our Superintendent is married to a former student. The parents of many of my current students are former students.
I run into former students constantly in my area, in my state, and even out of the US, and, it’s always fun.
It’s actually pretty awesome, but… when I started in the profession, things were VERY different.
I’ve also had a couple of former students enter the profession, only to leave after a few years. Things have changed SO much even since they graduated from HS, that teaching is not what it was, and not what they were expecting.
I can’t imagine what it would be like to be entering the profession today…
I am 8 years in and I know there are a lot of issues for teachers and the education system in general. Right now I am in an amazing district, very supportive leadership, and if all of that continues I can see myself staying for a long time. If that changed I would probably consider something else entirely. Hear a lot of stories of teachers going into the retail or corporate world and saying they’ve never been happier.
Wiw, this is very interesting, however be thankful for the many years you have had with your students. Now you should focus on retirement in your state. What age can you retire?? How many years do you need for full retirement???
Not really. I believe teachers live the longest as a group after retirement.
30 years this year, with 8-9 to go. Two of my students are teachers in the district and obviously a few kids of kids.
I have been teaching for 29 years.
Here I was feeling old, 40s. I am the oldest teacher in my school, except for one other. Teaching for 12+ years and after reading this post and comments I realize I still have a long way to go. You all are awesome!!! Interestingly enough in 5 years, if I am still here, I will teach the children of two former students.
I feel that way, daily. Started at 25
We had a 90+ year old English teacher in my HS. We’ve had teachers retire after more than 30 years who had HER as their HS teacher! She lived alone, no family or kids, just 1 sister. She would actually tell students she wanted to die while teaching. She stayed on until a surgery forced her out for the rest of the year, and administration made sure she didn’t return. Frankly, I don’t want to hang on like that, but I’ll find other educational stuff to do after I retire so I don’t get bored and my brain and body don’t rot too quickly. Take care of your health, folks, it’s the one thing you own.
Next year, I will have taught for twenty-one years and will be able to retire. I can retire at 59. And yes! Time has slipped by. I spent my first 15 years working in finance and accounting, but switched to education following my true vocation for reading and language. I have had NO regrets. The bottom line is that teachers do not teach for the love of money, obviously, but for the love of knowledge and learning. The key word is vocation, anyone who is not hard-wired to teach, should not be in this field, otherwise he-she will burn out quickly. The career is high-stress and high-demand at various levels.
You will get older regardless of your career path!
My 15 years old student becomes an engineering, I was 21 while she was 15 btw 🙈
