How long is too long to stay at a company without being promoted?

That depends on a lot of variables. If you're happy with the work and the money is fine, it may not be that much of a problem. But if you're ambitious and you feel that your forward progress is blocked, then probably two or three years doing the same thing is enough.

I’m happy with the work, the money is fine, but I can’t help but feel like I could get more on the open market, even if the brand name isn’t as strong as the company I’m currently at. It’s been 3 years and I think I’ve hit my ceiling here.

It depends on the company, your performance and your development plan, as well as your willingness to be part of your development journey and not just expect to handed a promotion.

1. Some companies have a construct that delivers promotion after a certain period of time and KPIs being met - they may have a bonkers array of titles (brand associate to junior BM to associate BM, to BM to Sr. BM) to allow for that. In those cases, if you’re not promoted on time, you’ll probably be encouraged to leave.
2. Some companies will have an amazing career development program where they engage with you on your career path, make it clear if they see you as someone with potential and work with you on that journey.
3. Some companies will just love what you’re doing right now and want you to keep doing that as long as they can. Maybe out of malice but more likely out of (somewhat innocent) shortsightedness.
4. Some companies are just clueless and hired to do a job and have no concept of what to do next.

If you’re not at #1, you need to take control of this and engage your manager and HR about your future with the company - state your career goals/wishes and ask what needs to be true for you to realize those with the company. 3 outcomes - they don’t see your potential, they would love to do something but there’s no system within the company (you can ask here what needs to be true to at least make a step up and make it clear it’s critical to you staying), or they love your ambition and they work with you on some form of plan, at the very least a short term one to get you to the next step and you’re now on their radar as someone with ambition.

TL:DR - take responsibility for your future and start the conversation - don’t sit there waiting for something to be handed to you

like

Thanks for this. I’ve been having the conversation since the 1.5 year mark and now I’m at the 3 year mark. They keep moving the goalposts and I’ve about had it. I’m also not really learning here so I feel like I may have hit my ceiling

Well, it probably varies some on the company and your position and experience. But I was at my last company for nearly three years without a promotion, a bonus, an increase in vacation, a raise, or anything, so I would suggest less time than that! How long have you been working at your current company? Dod you think it is time for a promotion and have you discussed you concerned with your employer?

3 years, they keep moving the goalposts

Honestly that all depends on you. Its really hard for any of us to say because it depends on the person and their career goals. For me I probably wouldn't stay more than five years without a promotion but in the role I am in someone has to retire for me to be promoted.

Someone has to retire for you to get a promotion? What sense does that make?!?

For me, it's 2 to 3 years max. It also depends on if you see that the job is leading nowhere which would then be much sooner for me. The bigger question though is are you doing something to earn the promotion?

Hell yes, I’ve been killing it for 3 years

In my experience, some startups promote employees every year! its just a title. If thats the case you dont need to worry or bother but if its a real promotion with a solid foundation then every 2 or 3 yrs

Yea this hasn’t happened for me unfortunately :(

I’d say 2, 3 years too.

That’s what I’ve been hearing! I’m outta there

Is it more worth it to go into FDD at a regional firm now, or hope that my current big 4 will transfer me come spring 2021?

I'm kind of in the mindset of only doing FDD at big 4, otherwise I'll go straight to industry. Am I being too down on mid-market FDD experience and the related exit ops?

Also, I can't go the route of doing FDD at a different big 4. Already got rejected by all of them cause I'm not in audit (but have CPA).
