I just ended up getting laid off, and I had noticed for a while they had a hiring freeze. I seemed to have slowly had meetings cancelled or postponed. I went up to my boss a couple months ago and asked about my job security but of course at that time they were like, "oh you're safe" smh. I think that's the best thing we can do at times is be open with management about our job security. Though you're right, if it really seems you'll lose your position, it never hurts to be ready and ahead of the game.
Be prepared, but don't worry. Worry is just one more problem to deal with at a time when you definitely don't need more problems. If you are concerned, if there are rampant rumors, or if you have noticed empty desks multiplying around you, talk to your manager. Don't approach them on your knees or hat in hand begging to be spared the axe. Just say you need to know, that you deserve to know, if you could be subject to layoff in the near future. Unless they are a complete douche, they should give you an honest answer. Of course, honesty is a rare commodity in the managerial stratosphere, so do some preliminary ground work to at least determine if remaining in your location is feasible or if you may have to look at relocation to find a suitable position in the event of a job loss.
