One would argue that overtipping isn’t a bad thing, only is if multiple cards being used so one person doesn’t look cheap. That said, I think 20% is the norm across the board with 15% being the absolute floor.

Your friend hasn’t survived off tips, apparently
Pro
20% usually 30% if service was outstanding.
Also remember waiters and bartenders tip out a percentage to back of house/hostess based on sales. So under tipping is going to hurt the waiters bottom line. But also that’s not your fault, industries fucked up. That’s why it’s full of jaded people with shattered dreams. Sincerely, former waiter.

100% agree. I just want to go to a restaurant and pay for the price of the food as stated on the menu. After a 13% tax + tip, it gets so expensive! Hopefully one day :(
Pro
15% for decent service 20% when great. Across the board. Doesn’t matter how expensive
I’m so tired of the “a server doesn’t get a living wage” narrative. In the end I tip at least 20% but do not agree with this (US only) bs.
It’s a not a narrative, it’s an economic reality in the US. The system needs to be changed and everyone just needs to be paid good and livable wages, but we know that is not happening any time soon.
20%. Maybe 25% if the service was exceptional. 15% if the service was awful.
I live in the UK and these figures seem nuts!
Typical here is 10-15%.
Most restaurants will add on either 10% or 12.5% to the subtotal as a discretionary tip
Well the starting wage can be as low as $3 USD a hour. So there is a gap to close
Your friend is dead wrong. 15% is minimum, I go to 20% as the good service standard. 25% if they go above and beyond.
I tip 20% across the board, generally rounding up to the nearest $5 if the bill is over $100. I’ve tipped 30% if the service is extraordinary, I’ve also tipped 50% a couple times if I know the Somm or server got me something for free that they absolutely didn’t have to and/or aren’t doing for all the guests. I don’t change my % based on the fanciness of the restaurant. I also tip on the total including tax, but I know that part is not necessary
Anyone else think it's just easiest to find the big bold numbers at the bottom (the after tax total) and do 20% on that?
Would it be great to have the industry change so waitstaff don't have to rely on some of the a$$holes here to make a living? Yes. But any of us going to Applebee's on a fancy date night isn't going to change that. Your server is a kid trying to pay for college (and bad customers will start them out cynical), a parent trying to raise their kids, someone trying to make rent, or a side hustle for someone with financial goals bigger than the 9 to 5 would allow.
20 percent is the minimum; it’s what servers wages are based on getting
18-20% post tax.
Haha. I never thought about the tax diff by state.
15-20%. 30% is high

At least 15% on pre-tax total. Personally, I usually tip around 20-25%, up to 30% around the holidays.

25%
I tip 15-35 percent always because that is the system we have in America, and that is is how people who work mostly for tips make income.
I always tip 20%(and that’s for really bad service) if it’s great service I tip 30-35%
20% everywhere. 25% if service is unmatched. I actually sometimes leave more at a cheaper mom and pop store to support small businesses who are able to make us quality food for less $.
I always tip 20% regardless.
If service is exceptional then I’ll probably do 25-30%. Personally I would never go below 20%, even if it was terrible service.
Tip on tax or subtotal?
Subtotal!!
I’m very low maintenance. If you just bring me my food and top my water off, you’re not getting more than 20%.
