One would argue that overtipping isn’t a bad thing, only is if multiple cards being used so one person doesn’t look cheap. That said, I think 20% is the norm across the board with 15% being the absolute floor.

Your friend hasn’t survived off tips, apparently
Pro
15-20%. Sometimes more but rare
You do know restaurant profit margins are like 4%. Restaurant industry isn’t built to not tip
20% is typical for me - 25% if service was exceptional!
I do 18-20% all the time
30% is high; did you and your friend split the bill? If so, not really cool to over-tip and expect the friend to split it without asking for approval. Even if the service was great.
Then I don't see why he would care what you do with your money
Remember when tipping 10% was standard?
This always gets brought up. I’ll say it again. If you’re good, you’re getting 25%+. If you’re bad, have an attitude, I see you standing around, you’re getting 0. Tips are tips. Some of these servers need to be humbled and not expect optional tips.
Pro
I'm not sure which restaurants you frequent, but I rarely see servers "standing around" and even fewer who "need to be humbled". Ever worked in food service? I have.
Your friend is cheap.
I do 20% standard. if it’s really good service I may go a little higher.

About 18%. I’ll usually tip that everywhere. 15% if the service is bad, and 20% if the service is excellent. And if it’s a cheap place I’ll often go much higher because it’s not the server’s fault the food is cheap.
30% minimum…if good service close to 40%.
20% minimum. 50-100% depending on cost and service.
15-20% — the amount of the bill is irrelevant.

Standard is 18, 20, and 25/30. So however you feel they did should fall between that range. It doesn't matter if it's a higher priced restaurant.

20% - 22% regardless
20% unless service was exceptional or very crap then may adjust.
So many factors.. vibe , service, age of staff and location. I always try to tip higher local especially for high school kids

20% on full subtotal (before taxes), including ALL food drinks or whatever
Tends to be 10% in the UK, but then we have a minimum wage, rather than letting people rely on tips.

20% minimum wherever I go, whether burger or Michelin. If any of the dinner guests are a pain to the server, I always put a little more tip.
Always cash.
