I just interviewed for a CFO position at a startup with a non-technical CTO. It seems he delegates most tech decisions to the tech lead and doesn’t fully understand the product himself. How big of a red flag is this?

Anyone feeling charitable today in the referrals area? I'm happy to provide some proof of competence and earn it. Raytheon Technologies Corporation - Deloitte - Booz Allen Hamilton

Also looking for potential mentors from these companies and happy to provide the connections within Lockheed Martin.

Hello! I’m a recently graduated MSc Criminology student looking for work. I don’t know where to start or what I’m even looking for, but I’m generally interested in criminology, cyber security (no coding experience) & doing research. I’m very social and friendly and enjoy working with people, would also like hybrid work so I can work from home at times.. Any tips as to which roles I should look for? Any specific companies I should look into? (Preferably UK based, but open to most of EU)

Chatting with a recruiter tomorrow. Haven't worked with a great one since I was junior. What are some good questions to ask?

Congrats everyone! This week was terrible with omicron, schools closed, backlogged work from the holidays, general malaise from two years of a pandemic, etc. It might have been the most difficult week of my career so far. But, we made it. Kudos to everyone. Here’s hoping that next week is better.

Hey all - How long is it taking to get H1B visa stamped in India after dropbox appt?

Okay. Possibly a stupid question BUT Imma ask anyway.

Can someone just explain how you plan out how much to bill so you can make sure it’s not a mad scramble at the end of year? I’m moving from a firm where I was lacking in any kind of mentorship. No one ever just sat down and explained the most efficient way to track/measure your hours to confirm that you are on track.

Is there just a secret excel spreadsheet that all lawyers have and I just missed the memo???

When will I find my passion? I’m a criminal prosecutor chasing PSLF (5 years left). I am just not that into it. My wife is a teacher and loves her job so much she could work 16 hour days. I am jealous. My passion is my family and my job is just a paycheck. How can I figure out what I really want to do? Do I want to get that obsessed with work? Help!

I’ve been negotiating a settlement on behalf of a client. OP is a major corp. we’ve gone back and forth for months, almost a year. Finally came to a final agreement and we’re reviewing for final signature. Then client is reviewing and decides they want something else modified. It’s a point of contention. OP has said no. Should I communicate this to client before pushing back against OP’s rejection of the mod?

Hogwarts Houses? Go!

It’s amazing to me that it’s a running joke in the legal community that typos magically appear in pleadings the minute after they’re submitted, and yet associates are made to feel like shit when there’s the smallest of errors or mistakes in documents.

If your firm does an associate retreat, what were your favorite activities and what were your least favorite activities?

How did you know when to quit? / what did you need to quit?

I do not have any offers to lateral or whatsoever but I don’t think I can stay at my current job for much longer. I’m at a “boutique” law firm (with Big Law partners) outside of the US.

Just graduated law school with honors but don’t have a job lined up. I’m thinking about just going solo and starting my own firm after taking the bar in Sept. Finances are not a problem. Planning to practice IP transactions/prosecution/litigation. I have work exp/clerk/extern but no associate exp. This climate is crazy and I think I can grab a lot of smaller work myself through my own networks and be my own boss. Also currently grabbing an mba part time. Thoughts? Advice?

A lot of people complain about millennials but a Gen Z clerk just told me that she wasn’t going to download some documents from a deal site because they were so many (and she had to download one document at a time) and I should review them directly on the site.

Bro, what?

Mexican attorney here - I am currently researching LLM programs (specifically M&A) and somehow paying USD$200K to study in the US doesn’t seem too appealing.

I hold a Spanish passport which may help with tuition fees in European Universities - do you recommend any European LLM programs or should I just bite the bullet and ask for a loan and pay the USD$150 - 200K?

Mentioning the programs is greatly appreciated.

So, I hate my job. For years I’ve been trying to work through nitty gritty and minutiae in the hopes that sorting out those details would “fix” my dissatisfaction. I’ve switched jobs a few times and dabbled in a few practice areas. But I’ve realized I just hate practicing law. Is there any reason to tell your boss or supervisor that you’re miserable? My assumption is no. They won’t fix things. So why would you? Any reason I should reconsider? (P.S. looking for an exit, but that’s not settled.)

Anyone got recommendations for a good Xbox racing game? Or something Super Mario-esque?

Speaking of side hustles, any recommendations? $$

Happy Be Kind to Lawyers Day!

My email writing process: I start it. I get distracted with something else. I come back to it. I write it. Get distracted. I spell check it. I get distracted. I spell check it again. I reread it. Rewrite it. Spell check. Distracted. Go back to it and double check the receiving email addresses. Then if I remember, I hit send
and then. After I send it. I find a typo. Ugh.

I don’t know why but I abhor when a deal does not use DataSite - why would you use “Dropbox”?

Just finished watching Downfall, call me naive but it amazes me how not one person got jail time.
