Set up a development conversation and say what you just said
Think long and hard about what you are looking for in the conversation. From my experience those who excel at marketing and communication are the ones who end up climbing the corporate ladder. There is a progression path for SMEs/technical but that’s typically not management roles. There is nothing wrong with your choice as long as it is a conscious one as it might be career defining. You might not enjoy it but you might become good at it or alternatively if you truly don’t see yourself doing it in your career then that’s a good conversation to be had.
Most of us figured this out much later down our career path when we saw it play out. Think hard before choosing that path. In retrospect given what I know today I probably would have at least tried those other paths
I did that exact thing. It is very beneficial to be on the same page with your manager.
Detail what is communication/marketing task; then detail analytical tasks… and see where they overlap and do this instead
I thought about what I might really want then used my year long review to have that conversation. Gave me a few months to think about it and time to talk to others in the department about what their roles looked like.
