How would I go about negotiating the salary on an offer as an Analyst from a small company that does Diversity & Inclusion Consulting. I’m currently a tech consultant at Tier 2 firm and wanted to make the pivot as D&I is something I’m more passionate about. The company set me at the Analyst level instead of Consultant because my primary function wasn’t D&I/human capital - this was a requirement for the leadership. While I can’t negotiate level, is it okay to push and negotiate salary?

I think it will be tough to use your current/project salary as leverage because you’re in totally different fields. I would suggest to find out what the market pays for D&I analysts and use that as leverage if possible. If the analyst role is entry level there, then I would also mention that they’re getting someone with core consulting skills at an entry level salary and ask if they can offer a bit more.

like

Thanks for your feedback. That is what I was thinking.

It’s tricky because since they’re a small company they don’t hire entry level. They only hire folks with experience (from both management consulting, financial services, and industry). So their analyst level is really an experienced an analyst and their consultant level is really a senior consultant.

I really like the team. I can see myself growing at the company so I plan to accept the offer. I also plan on performing well of course, and asking how I can exceed expectations to get promoted to Consultant next year.

The slight problem is that the salary is already lower than my current salary as a tier 2 Tech Consultant. I also find out if I get promoted to Senior Consultant early next week. Promotion or not, my base will definitely increase. I was hoping to use that as leverage in starting the conversation to negotiate. My concern is that I don’t want my career to feel like it’s taking a step backward to Analyst instead of forward.

Should I still try to negotiate the salary or should I just accept that some exit opportunities with smaller companies/nonprofits compensate less?

Does your firm have I&D that you could work to move into?

I know at Accenture you can basically move/do a lot of these I&D, or coaching, or whatever the one persons +1 is another FT role...doesn’t have great advancement, but does exist...

Could you pose that to a Sr Leader prior to departure...either in your group to network or direct to I&D to maybe pull over (probably both)... ”considering a shift into work area of interest, I&D, before accepting an offer- wanted to see if there was a way to pivot internally in the firm...blah blah blah”. If they like you, often they’ll see what they maybe can do...

Literally no downside. May or may not want to share “I have an offer”...

Keep in mind that the rates they charge for D&I consulting are most certainly lower than what tech consultants are billed at. Going into that field you are most likely going to have to stay at the same salary or take a pay cut. As for the title of “analyst” that does not really make a difference. It all comes down to YOE. At the end of the day, take the job that makes you the most fulfilled! That is far more important than a job title.

A quick note about what I’ve experienced, in my decade long career, is the real advantage of MBB or FAANG - it gives you a shot at stretch roles that are outside your expertise. Not all the time or even most of the time compared to better candidates with specific experience for the role but gives you this wildcard shot at a vast array of opportunities.
