How would you react to a lawyer on one of your live deals asking to work in your IB group?

We hired a former BigLaw lawyer once at a VP level. We thought it would help with latter stage deal stuff since it’s largely legal in nature. They were terrible at everything but that, and even then… they weren’t great.

Nothing against lawyers, but they’re trained to be factual, everything supported by case facts. Not saying what we do isn’t diligence-able but you need to stretch a bit/put a sales/marketing spin.

It’s called “lipstick on a pig” for a reason.

Yeah some of them end up being all stars and some end up being duds. Used to be a more common change (bunch of top bankers and PE founders are ex-lawyers).

That’s fine what’s wrong with that

Why would you want to switch though?

Want to join young to ensure I become proficient at modelling and make the move asap. Have received the advice to do so from all my role models who made the transition. Otherwise, people look at you as a "former lawyer" forever.

Make sure he buys you dinner first. Just be careful man.

1 thing that has resonated with me on this App throughout Covid, is that the beliefs I held about my consulting colleagues were completely & totally wrong. A variety of the discussions, particularly those re: the political environment in the US & the widespread movement to pursue equality, have demonstrated that many of my peers are sociopaths incapable of exercising the same objective & critical thinking skills they they apply when charging clients hundreds hundreds of dollar an hour.

Looking for advice: I have an analyst (9 months on the job) who still doesn’t get it - repeatedly misses comments, doesn’t follow instructions, slow, etc. I have raised this to both my MDs and they seem to be adopting a “not my problem” approach when I mention it. I had advised against hiring this analyst post internship and my MD insisted that all the issues I highlighted were fixable. I have tried teaching him to no avail and frustration with him is growing. Any suggestions for how to handle?

How did you give notice you were lateraling to people you like? Particularly if you haven't been there that long?

I'm lateraling to another firm because frankly I think the management of this one is terrible, but the people (and individual partners) I actually work with are awesome. I've only been here for about 18 months, so I imagine that short time frame will make it extra awkward 😬

Networking question here. A retired partner at the firm I used to work out reached out to me recently about attending an afternoon during the week (b4 4/30) with one of his long time clients. The partner and I have kept in touch since I joined my new firm and I feel like his invitation is a great networking opportunity since the client (who I have worked with before) is on a number of boards. Torn as how to request off as an S3. Could materialize to nothing but could be good for reconnecting.

Interesting all the noise about these PPT, my take:

The pandemic took all the upside of an IB analyst life (client meetings in person, fancy trips, suit up, worshiped at networking events) and left all the juniors with the downside (long hours, monkey-like type of job, aggressive work environment).

Not that the complaints are not sort of legitimate but you may need to revise the decision-making process that led you to accept a return offer. Specially if you were looking for less hours.
