Are you or them new? What’s the difference in tenure? Why did you reach out to them? :)
Cool! So generally beyond the potential who they are and what they like to do outside of work, these questions are great:
- what works great in our team that you’d like to be intentional in keeping?
- what are you most excited about this year?
- what’s the main challenge that my role and function can help you with? (For people outside your team: same thing but frame it as “my team” since it might require a bigger effort)
- what would be a quick win?
- who else should I speak to? (You can also ask why)
The idea here is gain rapport by starting with excitement and what’s good, then go into challenges - both big rocks and quick wins (quick wins more important in your transition because they build on your reputation in the new role), and then a natural direction to the next person :)
