Check with your benefits coordinator. Some companies offer specific paternity/family care leave, usually 2-4 weeks, that is a paid benefit. Many require the employee to use their paid sick leave days and give them the option of using PTO (vacation) days. In situations like you described, your company will allow unpaid leave under the FMLA, which saves your position for you until you are able to return to work. You cannot work at all if you are on FMLA. Unless you would like to be permanently part-time, I wouldn't advise asking for that consideration for a temporary period. I am also doubtful a company would allow a director-level employee to be part-time, unless there were two employees who agreed to "split" a position -- either with half days or divided up during the week. Congrats on the new baby, and best of luck to your wife. Take care of both of them. That's "Job One."
