I had a few teachers pressure us into displaying our pieces like this in ad school. I think it makes sense for award show submissions -- but not for portfolios (or at least, not for every piece).
Agreed as well!
If you're writing a book book, fine. If you're showing work in a portfolio, nah. If I click your link and have to read a hundred words to get an idea of what you did, I'm gonna keep clicking links until I land on one that shows work that can speak for itself.

So it’s just like every presentation deck we make every day. That is a little unsatisfying.
Nope, I posted an example below.

I’m fine with this, as a summary at the top. But if I like the idea then I want to see the executions.
Seems like they're trying to make it look like they made the actual work when in reality they were the Juniors asked to design just the Cannes board. 👀
These are students OP is referring to. So the work in question would be spec work, only they’re formatted like Cannes case boards
Kinda visually overwhelming. On the other hand it’s nice to see everything at once, I imagine they’re doing this because people viewing their books only have x amount of time to view each portfolio. So they’re kinda strong arming ppl to look at the whole thing, risky move. Cuts down on users having to navigate or scroll, but at a cost.
I still prefer the two line summary with a visual. Break down of each component following that. And an option to view the entire thought/creative process. I’m just a jr. though, but I imagine thats how most prefer to see work 🤷🏻♂️

I've taught at ad schools and mentored a bunch of students. For some reason, this is how a lot of schools tell their students to do it.
I'm with you, OP, I think it's awful.
Basically, I tell my students they can have those boards in their book, but they need to break it up.ontl pieces, too. So we can see the design, read the copy, etc.
I show them my book as an example. No awards boards anywhere in my book.
Exactly! These boards only show your idea thinking skills, but they don’t show your craft skills for both the copywriter and Art Director. Like how would this idea be expanded in print, ooh, experiential, etc. that’s the hard part there.
Their books are slides from a deck?
Nope, I posted an example below.
Are you talking specifically about portfolios that came out from One School?
Not specifically, but I did see those. Saw some cool ideas. But, been seeing this lately from other schools as well.
Just for clarification for everyone, it’s like these boards you see in Cannes:

Very MAS
Or like this one
They’re taught by industry pros. We are to blame.
