That's like the first thing they tell you at training when teaching you how to use T&E. they probably repeated that about 10 times.
Omg how is this the second person who doesn't read the message that pops up when you submit your time that says did you accurately reflect your time, client code and LOCATION! before submission. OP do you at EY too?
Your W2 has multiple states on it. Did you think that was for funsies? Who does your taxes? They should've said something.
Did you have hotel receipts or expenses at your other state? Our expense folks catch it if you expense something in a state you don't charge time to. All in all, you signed a time sheet saying you were accurately recording the location and you didn't. That's fraud sweetie, however you dice it.
So you just ignored multiple states on your W2?
Yes, they certainly could.
OP how many years in consulting?
OP: if you work for Deloitte, you are in violation of independence if you don't file in the required states. You make that declaration on your annual (or more frequent for some people) representation
@A1: more than 1 year now. I was an industry hire and did training with a bunch of tax accountants (the irony), which is why I think they never mentioned that because the topic was not relevant to the other attendees. What should I do now? If I start reporting all of a sudden, wouldn't that be a red flag? I'm in TX and not paying state income tax now
Go to your local office and talk to the tax team. See if u can get someone to help u file an amend. U can amend tax filings up to 3 years retrospective.
......ok so that's multiple levels of fraud that now the firm is also party to.
While I generally agree with K1, if you didn't record time to the other states and they're not on your W2, I would do nothing. Do it right going forward.
Do the states ever go after you for this? I'd prefer to not have to deal with this bs obviously
qq: so I had a client out of state for about 4 months in 2016 (later half of 2016) and now have a project from January until after tax season) would I need to file?
A1-probably, likely. Check your W2. That lists the states where the firm withheld and whrrr you'll need to file.
Op I'd file. Witholdings were made so it's likely you owe little (and hopefully small penalties) and perhaps you are even owed a refund. You can always do the return to see the impact before you file.
@KPMG: I didn't report the other states in my time sheet so the w2 came out with only my home state

LOL @ this fraud
@KPMG3: not trying to be argumentative here, but you know the key difference with fraud is the intent right? 🙄
