I do analysis for a living (and am plenty good at it in a business setting) but emotions and other intangibles get involved in my personal decisions. Wondering if the hive can help me settle my mind about my current vehicle situation and whether I should make a change. The right answer is very well "change nothing" Cont.

So tl;dr: you have an old ram and a RAV4 and you need to tow 3500lbs is the main point. So first off all, idk how much towing experience you have with different vehicles, but a ford maverick is not a tow rig. Yea it will handle it per the specs, but having a real, heavy truck or SUV to tow is an huge quality of life and safety improvement, esp when it comes to cross winds. I’m a huge fan of the Maverick price point and how Ford tried to make a small truck, but as soon as we’re talking about towing being a main point, I’m taking the Maverick off the table. ESP if you are taking 7hr road trips with your family.

You also talk about having a bed for greasy things. I can tell you from personal experience, being able to haul things on the exterior of your car is fantastic.

So with the towing and the garbage hauling points, I think you need a truck. You should get rid of the 03 ram before it becomes a giant paper weight, and never buy a stellantis/FCA product again.

I *would have* recommended a Ford Ranger/Toyota Taco/Chevy Colorado or the GMC Canyon, but if you are taking 7hr road trips to a lake house, I would recommend sticking with a full sized truck (thought I think the new Ranger has the most rear seat room of the small trucks - I need to be doubled checked on that). For context, I also take a yearly 7hr trip to a lake hauling a boat and family. We run in a convoy with a Tahoe and Silverado 2500 - but we have a much heavier boat than 3500lbs. They are both FANTASTIC for hauling ppl bc the second rows are HUGE

So with that said, I’d recommend a Ford, Chevy/GMC 1500. If you’re worried about price, find a lightly used one. And get the V8 variant.

Recalls are for the 2023 and prior years. I wouldn’t buy a first year or two model even from Toyota. Get a 2024 or 2025. Also, the engine recall was only for non-hybrids. Toyotas have recalls but the company actually addresses the issue and improves design/manufacturing well.

We are a three car household. My spouse's car is fine as is, they are happy. In 2022 this group talked me into buying a rav4. At the time my daily driver car got totaled and I really wanted a hybrid maverick. They were literally unobtainable. So right now I have a 2 year old rav4 (non hybrid) and a very rusty 2003 ram. I need to be able to tow 3500#+ and we drive 7 hours each way a couple times a month to our lake house (I put 24k miles per year on the rav4 and 3k miles on the truck) . It seems silly for me to have two cars but there would be a tax title and license fee implication for me to make a change. I could probably sell the truck for $3-5k, there is nothing mechanically wrong with it but at some point there will be. It has good tires, a cap, etc. I pay $750/car for insurance per year. The rav4 is a bit light duty for my towing needs but theoretically could do it. I also regularly use the truck bed to move greasy heavy big things, so I would trash the rav4. the maverick tows a bit more and would at least provide me a smaller bed. The way I drive, the ram gets 15mpg, the rav4 gets 28mpg. Does it make sense for me to just run the truck into the ground? Sell the truck while I can and just use the rav4? Sell the truck and buy a newer $5-7k truck and keep the rav4? Sell both cars and get something else? I feel like I'm wasting money in this equation.
