You're right, but there's a good reason. They are just starting their career, so their focus is on getting paid enough to pay the rent, car note, car insurance, utilities and groceries. They are young and healthy, so they aren't concerned about health insurance benefits. They have over 40 years of work ahead of them, so they aren't thinking about retirement. Most are not married and if they are, the spouse also works. They don't really need a family plan health benefit. The value of employment benefits won't hit them until they have gotten over that initial flush of pride at having a "real job" and the kids start popping out.
If you’re working in retail or hourly hospitality, the benefits don’t really add up too much most don’t offer any real benefits except to be paid holiday time off and the occasional PTO but that’s rare because I know I’m 37 and I only look at the pay being offered because honestly that’s really what matters most to me
I feel like you're kind of right there.... I am 26 and have my eyes open for the future with a retirement and what benefits the company can offer but the issue I'm facing is the jobs with benefits keep you just below the amount of hours to be able to utililize that option. Luckily for me, my previous job had a retirement program set up towards the end and I was able to set myself up for an IRA with that financial advisor once I left to be able to continue growing my account for the future.
That's true, but the age group you're describing seem to be workers who are not attending college. So I would imagine their focus is just on finding a job that provides some income. And as the benefits they're offered are probably nothing impressive anyway, they wouldn't be a major concern.
You understand benefits are considered compensation and they take out a portion of your check. So depending on the job that could be up to a 1/4 of the gross wages. So the money part is very important in that equation.
