This sounds like a normal retail based job anywhere. And maybe you could just ask for some guidance on how to best manage your time to get it all done
I would say the answer can vary depending on how much traffic the store gets and how many other sales staff there are. If there is a constant flow of people checking out, then someone needs to be at the register at all times. Remaining sales people can divide the tasks of helping customers while also restocking shelves. However if there are multiple salespeople, it is the managers job to direct who is on register, who is assisting customers and who is stocking so that there is no confusion.
Sounds like you may be in a small operation, possibly even a only one salesperson needed kind of store. My first job was in a gift shop like this. There would be times of heavy traffic but there were also lulls when no one was in the store. I could manage customer service, check outs and restocking all on my own, so yes it is doable. It's only possible if you have lulls though. Some days were a steady flow with no time to restock, but other days would be slow. We opened at 9 but rarely got customers before 10, so I new I had that hour to set up and stock. It's just time management and gaging typical customer routines.
If there is someone else who works there that you trust, ask how they manage the multitasking. If their answer is that they don't, it is possible that the manager doesn't schedule enough people to cover the workload. In which case, I would start shopping for a new job.
Welp I can tell you this..I work at Ollie’s and I’m a Freight Supervisor who does the Trucks, Opens the store, does the safe n drawers n paperwork for the day AND Deal with all the Un-Godly Customers who can’t find a Box of Coffee..!!! Im the Lowest paid Supervisor there…So if the $$ is Good and you want to stay at your job then multi-task a little more. It’s not hard just take the day…Remember we get paid by the hour My Dear. 🤓
Honestly yes this does sound pretty normal. I would say talk to them about what places you could improve on but it’s pretty normal that as you progress in a job that you would take on more responsibility. Now if this isn’t in your contract or job description, that’s a different story. You can discuss a new contract for a possible pay change but if the contract says something about additional tasks may be needed then this wha you agreed to with the job.
Very normal. They don't expect you to do them at the same time. I do at least 20 different things during 8-hours shift.
This is a normal expectation for a retail associate. Ask your manager for some
Best practices that can help you become more efficient.
That sounds unrealistic. What industry do you work in with retail? Gas station or grocery? I would talk to him/her and set expectations for sure
You clearly aren't in the business.
Your priority is always working people. Not stocking make sure if there is a door alert you can hear it. Stocking shelves is a 2ndary task. Your in a of service job just remind your manager stocking is in job description not only job
Chief
It sounds unrealistic. But if the store is small enough it may be possible. It all depends on how much traffic the store sees.
Some people do seem to move super slow, and don't seem to be able to judge how to occupy their time properly without someone telling them what to do each minute of the day. Maybe this is you, and your boss expects you to be able to be more self sufficient and get all the tasks done in a timely fashion throughout the day, without needing to be micro managed. If you can't figure out how to do this, then you may not be well suited to the job. However, if the cash is constantly busy and there is no down time to stock shelves and keep the store neat then you might need to have a discussion with your boss. Perhaps they feel that you are wasting time between customers.
At CVS not only check people out, you are to stock shelves, help people at the self check out, keep up with the photo and poster machines, also help people drop off and pick up UPS packages, pick and package on line orders, help people with online and in store photos and help people find items in the store for purchase. Oh did I mention also sign people up for our loyalty programs.
