I feel guilty every time I take a “brain break” at work, even though it’s literally the only way I can reset and keep functioning. Everyone else seems glued to their desks, powering through without flinching, while I’m over here walking laps just to stop my brain from short-circuiting. I know it helps me be more productive in the long run, but I still worry I look lazy or unprofessional. How do you deal with the pressure to conform to work habits that just don’t match how your ADHD brain actually operates?

Sitting at a desk for 8 hours isn’t productivity—it’s performative nonsense. If breaks help you do better work, take them without guilt. Neurotypical norms shouldn’t dictate how all brains function.

Studies have shown that periods of "daydreaming" are better for creative thinking and problem solving. Take as many breaks as you need to fuel the ND superpowers.

Also, I can guarantee you those others you think are working so hard? They're slacking off, too.

Related is the psychological concept of "incubation"

I have to take breaks however I’m work from home so no one really knows what that looks like but me lol but if I take even a 5 minute reset I’m so much more productive then trying to power through take the time you need and plus it’s so much healthier to move around a bit during the work day! If anyone questions you just say I like to move my body every so often to keep my blood flowing and stay healthier ♥️

Big news! I bought my first mouse wiggler! 😅

So now I give myself much more leeway on getting up and taking breaks. Move my legs or sometimes even a short nap.

I spend less time ✌️working✌️, but I definitely get more done overall.

In some situations it helps to pretend you're having a smoke break

Can you have an exercise ball break or something else physical?

Have you heard of the Pomodoro Method? It’s a framework where you intentionally work in spurts with short breaks at the end. It’s effective for all kinds of people but especially ADHD. Sometimes it helps me to frame it as a productivity method instead of a personal accommodation. Remind yourself this is how you manage your time to be productive and that is a very professional and not at all lazy thing to do. You’re simply worker smarter instead of harder 🤷🏼‍♀️

Hi! I’m a young professional with less than 2 years experience, started a new job 1.5 months ago. I’m having quite some difficulties on balancing out my response time to tasks. While I act incredibly fast if not immediately with some, I sometimes take 1-2 weeks with couple of hours worthy ones. Sometimes I ignore, procrastinate or simply other more urgent things come up to increase the delay. Also I work with 3 managers in my team which doesn’t help with expectations nor guidance. Any tips pls?

My boss assigns projects with unclear expectations and provides no guidance on how to achieve them.

I've asked for help, and, to avoid a long post, she expects me to figure it out. Perhaps you go through this too, but when I don't have a clear guide on completing big projects, it paralyzes me because I don't know where to start. On top of that, I have anxiety, so "it has to be perfect".

How do you approach projects when your boss plays the "guess what's in my head" game?

Anyone a manager? I’m recently diagnosed (26F) and I can’t help but beat myself up everytime I fall short of my to do list. Makes me feel like a huge disservice to my team. I’ve been trying vitamin D and working out, but it makes my “highs” and “low” SO extreme. The simplest things are so complex in my mind.

If anyone feels similar, how do you manage these feelings? I’m personally considering switching to an individual contributor role, but can’t help but feel like a disappointment if I do.
