The process seems to be getting longer and longer, while the chances of it actually paying off or approaching zero.
I can remember a day where creative directors saw my portfolio, and just on the basis of my work and talent were already sold on me, and the interview was more a formality to make sure I wasn’t a psychopath. Basically if you got an interview with a hiring manager, the job was yours to lose.
Now, every process seems to start with a very rushed screening by someone outside of the Creative department who is often very inexperienced, and has probably not even glanced at your portfolio (and wouldn’t have the skills to evaluate it if they did). Just endless box checking to get to the next stage. They usually don’t even want to hear about you or your experience, just want to check those boxes and qualify you.
Then, if you do get to the next stage, all the feedback can be great, and everything can seem perfect— and you’re directly told that you’re moving forward the process—and then you just get ghosted, with no feedback. Not even the courtesy of a response to your thank you note.
In my opinion, there’s a lot of very talented people not working because of this process. And a lot of inferior talent who get the Jobs instead. And the proof of this is the overall decline in the quality of the work.
The way this market is, persistence with networking is becoming more and more a predictor of long term success than actual skill on the job
Oh man, I didn't even realize this is something interviewers would pick up on. How did you spot it? I might be giving that same energy during my interviews.
Y’all are getting interviews?
I totally get that. You can just sense when someone's been through the ringer with interviews. They might sound a bit drained or less enthusiastic, even if they're trying to put their best foot forward. It's like they've got that "here we go again" vibe going on.
