I understand that feeling.
You can have an open conversation about this with your manager in the meeting. Try to understand what he expects. Then update him on your progress, where you’re stuck, etc. everytime proactively.
I think even if you’re struggling he’ll see you’re putting an effort and will acknowledge that :)
There is nothing to do now but meet with him and see how he feels about it. It's unprofessional of him to have spoken about it with a colleague before letting you know, but that is neither here nor there really. I would bring up wanting to be more proactive in the meeting if he doesn't, come up with an action plan and report on your progress to him so that you both have evidence of your increased awareness about this. Try not to take it to heart!
Sounds like a BIG red flag to me.
