I freeze when I need to have a conversation with a senior leader. My mind goes blank and I wonder what to talk to them about. I am better with small talk with people at my level or below. Has anyone encountered this issue? What do senior leaders want to discuss or engage in in terms of topics of conversation? How do I handle this?

They want to be treated like normal humans just like your peers. They’re talking about the same things, watching the same shows as us and go through the same life problems.

My suggestion, take the title out of the equation and just talk to them like you would your favorite coworker.

I have had leaders in the past high up the chain of command, who, anytime I traveled with them, and anytime I was around them, never referred to themselves as their title, and made sure they were just introduced by their name.
When I asked him about this he said years before that point in his career, he had people with titles that he really looked up to and and eventually he figured out they were dumb jerks.

Agreed, forget the titles. They ones worth talking to will be worth talking to and the ones that aren't will quickly weed themselves out hahaha

You’ve got to work on your imposter syndrome. They’re not better or more important than you because of a title. They’re just another person. Take down the mental barrier

As a supervisor sometimes it gets a little lonely when you only have your employees. I want to be seen as a normal person who owns a pet and watches Stranger Things and wants to chat about random nonsense. Something that helps me with feeling uneasy about a conversation with my director is trying to decipher her tone, it’s not always easy but I can hear if she’s happy or angry pretty quickly now.

like

You freeze because you put them on a pedestal and think a certain way. you just have to engage as if they were normal person.

They put their pants on just like you in the morning.

If you have any strategic ideas or ways to improve the division/company, they’d be more interested in that than something minor/tactical.

like

Focus less on what you will say and more on following the conversation. That’s all it is…just a normal conversation.
